OK .. so I was dumpster diving this morning and came up with a really nice 400 PII set-up with a 17" Nokia monitor. I expected the worst but to my surprise she booted right up, Windows 2000 Pro no less. It's hooked into my home network already and I can't find a thing wrong with the system other than being SLOW AS HECK. My question is: Is there an adapter ... like a slocket or something that will allow me to put a newer CPU in there? It has a 400Mhz slot PII now? Or will a slot 1 PIII go right in?? It's working just fine, just slow compared to a modern unit.

Thankyou

i think a < 1gig celeron with slocket adapter is the best you'll be able to do. if you can find either.

depends on what mb is in there? there are adapters available, but you need to figure out what model mb it is 1st... you may be able to go to 1.4 or better...

my bx board is running a slocket with a one gig celeron. if you can find one they will run a PIII slot processor up to one gig speed. the PIII with socket 370 and a slocket will reach one gig also. they are cheaper than the slot one model. the PIII solution is faster of course. i'm not sure whether the faster celerons will work. i know that the faster PIII's will not, so i suspect that is true for the celerons also. if you know who made (or can find out) the mobo you should flash the BIOS first to the latest. i had to do this when i decided to run win xp home. made a difference in responsiveness. most of these are agp x2 for the video card.

I'm running a P3 Tualatin 1.2GHz Celeron on a Abit BX6-R2. I got the Slot to FC-PGA2 adaptor here. I think the BX can handle a 1.4GHz Celeron too.

Thank you for all the insight. The motherboard ending up being an MSI 6119. The computer was a factory built job by a company called Quantex and is very well built.

I bought the Powerleap brand slot to 370 adapter PL-iP3/T and a 1.4 Tualatin Celeron retail processor. A $90 hit .. this free computer is starting to cost me $$ .. oh well, it's a hobby, right?

Thank you
