OK, so far ... so goof ... i won't even bother with IE7 [win2k, anyway] .... IE6[final] still crashes on a brand new install of completely updated Win2K SP4

How exactly is it a step down from IE6?

Well for one it doesn't have the 6 years of tweaking that IE6 does. And that, of course, won't be changing for... well... 6 years.

I've heard that IE7 is great, but buggy as hell. I declined to install it when Windows Update downloaded it. I have FF installed, but I just keep using IE6 because I have no problem with using it.
That is simply false.

I still don't understand the problems people are having with IE7.

I've had no instance if "IE must be shut down" errors. I used to get one once a week or so with IE6.

And with installs on over a dozen machines I own or support, not one problem. From high end gaming systems, to old slow systems, to laptops and inbetween.

Weird.
Agreed, I've installed it on my system, friend's 512 MB/Celeron laptop via Windows Update, and father's 256 MB/Athlon XP system manually, all went just fine and it works great.

I've been a FF user for years, but FF2 has just been the worst for me. It's the most unstable FF i've ever had, seriously. I've had more instability and problems with FF2 then with all my other FF use up to this point combined. I'm tryin out opera 9 right now and liking it so far.

it still uses a ton of ram, but whatever... i don't feel it... eventually, i'm sure they'll fix that.

i'd use ie7 if only it had firefox's search prompt...

Inline Search... free
Spell Check... free
Dropping Firefox and never looking back... priceless.

I've been putting up with all of FF's nonsense since the Phoenix days and I'm glad it's gone.

I love how FF 2 can restore your session. I often refuse to reboot because I dont like closing windows. Now its more bearable. I wish all apps did this.

The last time I used Opera it seemed too busy. I like the minimalistic approach of Firefox, and Safari in OSX.

2. If you click the right edge of the back and forward button at the top, it will drop down a list of the pages you can go to. In essence it does allow you to skip multiple pages back or forward. Additionally you can use the fast-forward and fast-back buttons to go back/forward many pages at once.

what right edge?

also wtf..Opera opens the reply window as a new tab, but it looks like a small window. Only that it cannot be moved out of the borders of the main opera window

Tools --> Appearance --> Buttons --> Browser --> There are back and forward buttons there with dropdown menus that you can drag and drop pretty much anywhere on the toolbar.

If you drag the tab (from the tab bar, not the window itself) outside of the main window, it will undock itself and become a seperate window.

ok Opera definitely loads up the pages faster than ffx. Also with the same 4 tabs open on both, Opera is using 38228K, ffx is using 76220K. I think i might make Opera my default browser for now. Does Opera have an Adblock feature?

Opera does have a 'Content blocker' that works quite well, supports wildcards and everything. You can find precompiled lists for it on the web, but I use The Proxomitron

Opera has two problems.

1. Click back too many times and you get some stupid bitch that belongs in a Mac commercial on your screen.
2. There's no small back/forward arrow to skip multiple pages back/forward.

Until they fix those, FF FTW!

1. Tools --> Preferences --> set startup to 'start with home page'
You have it set on continue from last session.

2. See above

That's the page that caused it. Must be someone's picture in the thread, but I don't know why it would open on its own. Goatse would've shocked me less. :|

EDIT: Apparently it was DP's picture that caused it. Why would it open on its own?

This is a feature, not a bug. It's called FastForward. In theory, it's a predictor that is supposed to find the next page of a thread, news article, etc or if there isn't one go to the next thread on the forum. You can try it out on the stickied Boycott BF2142 thread. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as expected in Anandtech if there isn't a next page to the thread.

If it really bothers you, I'm sure there is a way to disable it somewhere, but you can read about it here

Sorry buddy, there may be a way to fix most people's gripes with Opera, but if it still can't 100% replace IE7, I'm not interested and your grand nagus's recommendation isn't necessarily the best for everybody. I don't want to use another browser unless I can use it exclusively, that includes never having to switch over due to rendering issues or problems with Flash/Java, or due to encountering IE-exclusive websites.

FF 2.0 works fine for me.

Add-ons Adblock and NoScript really help shield out the junk

Don't use IE for anything but Windows updates, and for a bank that requires it.

Well considering I've been using IE exclusively my whole life, I beg to differ. What are you saying prevents me from using IE exclusively?

Firefox does have some annoying problems (like deleting all your bookmarks/settings every now and then), but Adblock simply owns all.

What do you use to investigate sites potentially containing malicious content for Internet Explorer?

I don't visit such sites so I don't ever investigate that. And even if I did visit that kind of site by chance, I wouldn't know it was malicious until I was already there and already got infected, in which case I would just proceed to clean.

LOL wow that's definitely something I would not tolerate in ANY piece of software, let alone something that I use every day like a browser. I can't believe people call FF the best thing ever when it has unacceptable quirks like that.

Ok, so in your very limited view of the world wide web, you have no need for any browser except IE. That's all well and good, but it doesn't affect my point that is there currently no browser that is perfect for everything on the world wide web (my first statement being a bit off, but this sums it up a bit better).

Generally firefox does not delete bookmarks or settings. It just gets confused about your profile and creates a new one. The fixes are simple and well known.

And I would bet a majority of users never experience these issues, much like most IE users probably never experience many of its quirks.

<- Not defending any browser, they all still suck.

Good points, I'm sure that's not a frequent, hard to fix issue with Firefox. And I understand your point about IE, if you visit a lot of sites and need to test some, other browsers are required. But you have to admit that as far as site compatibility goes, IE can't be matched which is really convenient.
