CUSA has this online for $50.

At their B&M they had two models that claimed to be both USB2.0 AND Firewire.

I didn't look them over too closely.
One was a 320U2 and the other a 320U2F (I think).
I'm guessing on the model numbers but if it was U2F that could mean USB2.0 & Firewire.
I know some manufacturers include both USB2.0 and Firewire chips but only provide a connector for one.

I forget the prices.
They were either $59.99 and $69.99 or $69.99 and $79.99.

This thing might be priced right, but I handled one of these today at CUSA and, MAN, is it big like a textbook. Not a tidy thing at all. But CUSA sells it for 69.99 (typical, right?) everyday. Good find if you have the desktop space. Not what you would want to pack on a trip as a laptop expansion.

Just the other day I ordered the FW and USB2.0 version from NewEgg for $45.00 + 4 Shipping. The user reviews seemed mostly favorable...

I have one. They are very fast, but you need to be careful because if you don't properly remove it from Windows while the system is running it may corrupt your data. I've had that happen a couple times to me, but not always...

They are also kinda large if you are giong to have an external hard drive. You may want to look for a 3.5" enclosure for a hard drive, if that's what you're going to do with it..

They work fine (USB 2 version) but they are huge and the fan is really loud.:Q

What's the proper way to remove it?

I received this one. It is great!

Ensign: Typically you simply use the "Safe to remove USB....." icon in the taskbar, unplug the USB cable, then turn it off.

CompGeeks also has a wide selection of these external enclosures. I would highly suggest visiting there and checking out their models before deciding where to buy. also dont forget there's a 10% OFF code for non-geek special products.

i use a different enclosure on my 811s but it works flawlessly, i have the 3.5" version of this enclousure that i use for my 7200 hd (programs run faster off it, than on my laptop hd) i like it alot, mine is fw and usb2.0 and as for the disconnect thing, there are 2 settings in windows you can chose from, one where its just plug and play, and the other is faster (write caching) but you have to go to that "remove removable device" (or something like that)

If you remove the front cover to use it with a CD-RW, can you reattach the front cover to use it with a HD?

Thanks

in the device manager find the drive, and under policies you can chose between "optimize for quick removal" or "optimize for performance"

and ParatoOptimal, yeah you can put the cover back on and use it as a HD enclosure, thats what i did with my other enclosure till i put my 811s dvd+/- RW in it.

Yes, its just like a typical drive bay cover. It is however a bit big for a HDD as was mentioned.

I have one for my Lite-On 811s and it has served me very well. The fan IS a bit noisy, but nothing too bad.

I used to work at computer store that sold these enclosures...
I sold a lot of them, didn't really hear of any problems with any of them, except for the occasional doa unit.
my dad also has one and it works fine for him

they have a plastic exterior with a thin metal interior...
and be careful with that metal.. I cut myself on it a couple of times

Click on the icon in the lower right corner of your desktop that says "remove USB device" or "eject USB device" or something like that. Sorry I am not more specific. Just hover over the system tray icons and you will understand.

A long list thread in FW, search "enclosure"...

A user Dampier in FW vote for Plumax (he have like 11 units) cp to Bytecc (3 units).
But you never know as the OEM (chipset) change over time.

Not sure about the plastic..

As of now, compgeeks have many 3.5" but no 5.25" (for CDRW etc)... only one with firewire

I just went with the dealsonic Plumax 525U2 for 24.99 (another $1 drop) + 4.95 (also FW 2%. back )

One word of advice: Stay away from Bytecc products altogether if you ever expect getting your rebate!
They're really trying to cheat people with their scam, i mean rebate
