okay... i'm trying to install an oem copy of win98.. it has worked fine before, but not when i try it on this older computer (486dx2/80). it gives me a reboot. i've tried installing right from the cdrom and copying files to the hard drive and then instlling from there. it doesn't matter if i use switches or not, setup.exe sends me to a reboot. i tried installing it on this computer before and it worked. changes since then: different hard drive and intel 486/33 -> amd 486dx2/80. anyone have any insight on this? before, it installed fine and all, but it would never boot after it was installed (or even the restarts within the install). i even tried using 98lite. i don't know what to do!!! any comments, questions, suggestions are highly appreciated

Heres my "any suggestion - highly appreciated"
make Win 98 boot disk, must have oakcdrom.sys and 5 ASPI .sys files for CD's, and mscdex.exe
Insert diskette,
boot into prompt, pick full cdrom support
insert WinCD
A:\_
cd X:\ (change directory - "X" is your cd drive letter + 1, DOS himem sys takes a drive letter, so if "E" was your cd, make prompt "F&quot
No matter how many CD's you have only one will be operating, since DOS assigns letters on the fly, with SCSI and IDE, you may have to try each.
F:\WIN98> (all caps no space)

okay... well.. actually... i carry a win98 and win95 boot disk around with me, and my 98 disk would freeze the computer up during cd-rom detection, or creation of my virtual ramdrive. (okay, technically speaking, the disk doesn't freeze it, but you know what i mean). anywho... the win95 disk worked fine.. that's how i got to fdisk and format the drive. since i couldn't get the 98 disk with the drivers to load up, i found the latest dos drivers for the cd-rom from the manufacturer website.. i loaded them up. so now i have an autoexec.bat and config.sys that kick my cdrom drive into gear, so i can operate the stupid thing. so, i'm booting of the c: drive and i have d: access (d: being my cdrom drive) and no ramdrive. the only thing i can think of is to boot off the win95 disk and try to install... except then.. i have to manually run the commands in autoexec.bat and config.sys to get the cdrom spinning. i dunno what to try... any other thoughts?

I would just install 95. Then, if you are daring you could try an upgrade later

I'm not sure about this...but don't the specs for Win98 *require* a Pentium chip? (ie, will not work on a 486)?

Just a though...

...please don't hit me... ;-)

wizkid: one slight problem wit that... i don't know where my 95 cd is... it's "lost" if you know what i mean... even if i did, i don't have a 98 upgrade cd.. not that it matters since the computer is being used for typing, etc.

Verruckt: ... no win9x doesn't require pentium or higher... i ran 95 on this same chip actually... i think the specs call for 486/66.. but that can be bypassed with a switch when you start setup.exe (/iw i think.. don't quote me).. i've installed win95 on a 486/33 before...

any other clues? should i run a scandisk on c: then delete the partition info.. recreate the part. and then reformat? i might try that.. i don't know what else to do

I've seen Win95 run on a 386, and Win98 on a 486. Not that fast, either of them, but should work.

WhySanity - Do you realize that any 486DX2/80 is overclocked? The CPU and VLB busses operate at 40MHz, which is beyond their spec'ed 33MHz speed. Since Win98 tries to do DMA with the IDE bus, more so than Win95, it might give error message, hang, reboot, emit weird noises, kindle fire in computer, etc... Anyways, try setting the bus back to 33MHz (through on-board jumpers, fun fun!)

Edit - typos

PowerJoe: well.. actually... now that i think about it... i never changed any jumpers (which means it's probably still running as a 33MHz processor.. the funny thing is.. if you try to run setup without the switch to bypass processor check.. it will tell you when the GUI starts up.. not beforehand... of course this is an old IBM PS1 system.. so there is nothing printed on the mobo for jumpers as far as i can see.. anybody know where i can find info on that.. ? i highly doubt ibm has the info posted on thier site.. i will look again.. but i never noticed any printed info about setting the jumpers.. also.. i know the chip is good to run at even 50MHz x 2 .. although that was on a different mobo.. not sure how this would take it (if it even has OC ability.. which i _doubt_). but still... the jumpers are prolly set to 33MHz x 1.. and i don't know how to change it to do even 33 x 2.. if the mobo will support it.. i could prolly even do 33 x 2.5.. now that i think about it.. what ware the voltages for the proc supposed to be?.. i can run dos fine... ya know.. copying files from cd-rom and all.. but that doesn't meant that the setup gui might not overheat the proc or it may not be getting enough too... ACK! help!
