My HD is split into the C drive and a D drive. My C drive is almost 10 gb however currently it seems that I have virtually no free space on it. Apparently the Documents and Settings folder is 11.5 gb (obviously impossible as the drive is only 10 gb) yet when I enter it and look at the size of the folders inside they add up to only about 1 gb so I don't understand what is going on. I've uninstalled several games in the hope of freeing up some space but the amount freed up was minimal.

If the total size of the files in your Documents and Settings folder is in fact 11.5GB, then the files are likely compressed to fit on the 10GB partition with your Windows files.

Run TreeSize on your C: drive to determine which individual folders and files are actually taking up the space.

There are a lot of things you can do. First go Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Performance >> Advanced >> Virtual Memory, and set the page file on the d: to whatever the c: says, then set the page file on the c: to zero.

Next, on the my documents icon either on the desktop or in the start menu, right click on it and go to properties, you can Move the target folder, and set it to d:\my documents, and instruct it to move all the files.

Next, go into the c:\windows folder. Make sure hidden files & folders are visible, from tools >> folder options >> view, and delete all folders named $NtUninstall......$ or $servicepackfiles$

Then you'll have a lot more space on the c: before you start looking into resizing the partitions.

Had some incomplete bittorrent downloads, just freed up around 5gb using TreeSize. Thx.

Also about moving the My Documents folder I don't see any Move target option when I right click the desktop shortcut and go to properties.

And one other thing, if I were to use System Restore would I lose any of my files?

There are your regular shortcuts, then there are your special shortcuts (the initial icons for my computer, recycle bin, etc., that have different menu options). The special shortcut for my documents gives you the option to move it, a regular shortcut does not. I think the other way to get to a special shortcut for my documents is to view the desktop from within windows explorer. If you wanted to move it all to the d: to free up space on the c:.

I only skimmed the other posts above. But try clearing your temporary internet files. Those are usual stored on the same drive as your OS.

From IE Go to Tools -> Internet Options, then in the Temporary Internet Files Section Click Delete Files...

if docs and settings is 11.5 on a 10gb drive then you're using compression and getting really lucky, or your folder is redirected to the other drive.

turn off system restore then turn it back on and create a restore point. No, this doesn't touch your files, just extra copies of system stuff. As long as you have one point you're good. That space also gets used for scratch space for backups. Turning it off and back on should clear this otherwise useless data.

Download sequoiaview to help get cleaned up.

Thanks for the program Fardringle. This thing works great as it picks out your largest folders and sorts them into order by size. Maybe this program should be posted in the hot deals section also.

I'm glad it was helpful. One of my "special" users put a bunch of garbage in various folders on the system drive of our domain controller and I didn't want to look at each individual folder to figure out where the files were hiding so I did some searching and came across that TreeSize application. It works very well and is extremely easy to use.

Click on "Start".
Right click "My Documents" and click on "Properties".
There should be "Move" on the menu.

Don't move the pagefile to another partition unless it (other partition) is on another low-traffic physical hard drive.
