C-Media and GeForce4 problems

I'm trying to set up a box with a KT266A Dragon Plus and a GeForce4 MX440 under W98SE.

The display works fine but I can't get any sound from it. The Mixer doesn't load up completely - it appears in the task bar but is not actionable and in Control Panel> Multimedia its grayed out as not selected.

I have installed the latest VIA 4in1 and the latest driver from Nvidia - but I am suspecting a conflict between the card and the onboard sound.

Its been a while since I fooled around with Win98 - any ideas anyone?

Hi
I am using a Asus A7V266-E (kt266a & C-media sound),
and a gforce 3 (latest driver) for win98se & 4:1=4.45.
No problem here
Look at the bios (sound)???

yes, drivers installed and yes, 6 ch sound enabled in BIOS. Can you think of any other reason I can't select the Cmedia as the preferred audio output device? There are no exclamations under Device Manager, and the C-Media audio driver is listed as enabled and active, but under Multimedia> Audio>Preferred Devices it lists "no playback devices".

During re-install I get "error reading file - streamci not found" and mixer.exe in task manager has a terminal failure. I remember why I quit W98 now...

Nah its not just windows 98, I had the same problem . I had to download the newier drivers since they found out how buggie ac97 audio was on some motherboards. Expecially the kt333's and VIA's onboard sound.

It was so long ago though I forgot the site of which the drivers were on. I remember looking here:

http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=69

Its a driver I know that for sure.

Are you using onboard sound or a dedicated PCI soundcard?...I couldn't quite figure it out....if it's a dedicated soundcard, which one?

first off - thanks for the help here everyone.

The sound is integrated on-board via a C-Media chip.

I have chased the links down and tried the ComboAudio driver. I get the puzzling message that the VIA AC97 Audiop Chipset is not enabled in the BIOS. Now, I have checked more than once that on-board sound is enabled in the BIOS, and I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them.

It is not clear if I am sucessfully installing the CMedia drivers, since i get an error message midway that 'streamci' was not found, but it goes through the routine without assistance and says the driver is installed. Task manager shows Mixer is present, but even closing it causes a stack dump. So it sure sounds like a driver issue...

I might add that I used this mobo for a couple of years flawlessly under Win2K without so much as a hiccup, so its not defective.

The cmedia chip should have its own drivers, The chip is not made by VIA. I dont belive that the VIA AC97 Audio Chipset drivers would work. probably why your getting the errors.

The cmedia is a pretty good onboard 5.1 surround sound chip, and i had no issue with mine on my drapon kt266 board in the past. although i was using win2k pro.

info
streamci.dll 5.00.2020.1 Streaming Device Class Installer windows\system base5.cab
appears you might be missing/corrupt? a .dll from Win98 and you should not have any Via audio drivers installed..like mu220

OK I went back to basics - removed the device from DevMgr, replaced streamci.dll (with the version linked by ScrapSilicon) wiped out whatever old drivers I could find, ran Regclean and started over.

Seems like it worked!

Many thanks to all who responded!
