C1 owners, interesting find for why some c1 chips overclock so well.

Hey guys,
I stumble upon an interesting thread at overclockers.com. There appears to be different types of c1 chips and it may affect overclocking. Check it out here.

Garster,
Can you tell me which one you have?

Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone.

Don't remember witch one i have off hand, but i remember it was different from my other P4's,
I'll be moving it to another board soon so i'll let you know what it looks like then. But i had it in an Epox board and it now is in an Albatron board and having better results, currently at 148 fsb default voltage. It still craps out at 150 though. I've used Crucial, and Genuine Samsung PC2700 with same result. I have a stick of Corsair XMS3200 in my main box and going to give it a try in there latter this week

Any c1 owner to add to this theory or comments? Maybe all the newer C1 chips has the same arrangement of caps as the 3.06. Not sure it will help or hurt overclocking. With limited data, it seems like people with this 3.06 arrangment has overclock very well.

As being one of the original people to discover this finding I think I should post my story and Theories =)

I decided to go from AMD to Intel cause I saw the overclockin potential, started reading up....
Purchased a 1.8A Retail from newegg.com not knowing retail boxes have older processors in them...but anyways It was ok

I got that B0 1.8A week 16 to 2.6ghz 1.7v idle
It had the normal capacitor configuration on the bottom of B0's that I have seen on others.

Few days later I keep reading in forums and stuff bout these new C1's flying around and I set out to find some 1.8A C1's in town...I called up PC club turned out they had C1 stepped 1.8A's and I went down picked one up was all excited I may hit 3ghz...
It was a C1 1.8a week 35 from malaysia.
I popped that C1 in and its max was 2.7@1.65v I was fairly dissapointed...as some were hitting 3.5ghz+ at this time.
I took it back for an exchange on another 1.8A C1 week 35 malaysia to really see if it was a crappy chip but NOPE...same EXACT overclock!
now...I did noticed that the capacitor configuration on the bottom of both of these C1's were identical to each other but different from the B0. I thought that was normal.

The next day I went to a different PC Club to just see what C1's they had thinkin they would all be the same at the stores, or close. I walked in loooked at them and got all excited cause they were week 45 C1's 1.8A's
I bought one on the spot, stuck it in my computer and INSTANTLY took it to 3ghz@1.68v idle I Was so happy I finally found a 3ghz one.

One thing I noticed, here is the interesting part. Before I stuck in my newest C1 I compared it with the week 35 C1 I was replacing, I looked on pinned side of the chip and WOW! the capacitor configuration was TOTALLY different...and I was thinking, "why on the same stepping though?"

Then comes to find out I am surfing through the forums at ocforum.com
One guy put up 3 pictures one of the B0 stepped capacitor configuration which matched my B0 and one that was the C1 cap configuration the 3rd one .... WAS a 3.06GHZ cap configuration picture...guess what my 3rd C1 I just mentioned had the SAME EXACT configuration on the chip!

My theory is...no matter what week it is, try to get a cap configuration of the same one on the 3.06ghz chip.
I think this C1 is the true overclocking C1...I am gonna go back to that Pc club and get another C1 with the 3.06ghz chip cap config and see if I can take that C1 further then 3ghz, most people have been hitting 3.5ghz...and if these 1.8A's are really 3.06ghz declocked with same cap config, thne they should all hit 3ghz+
I am thinking maybe mine was a 3.06ghz that didnt quite hit 3.06ghz so they sold it as a 1.8A instead, but I have a feeling there are full fledged 3.06ghz chips floating around (its obvious cause of these 3.5ghz+ clocks from 1.8a's).

So my ultimate suggestion and theory is, when buying a C1 get the same cap config as on the 3.06ghz chip!
Id say it increases your chances of hitting 3ghz + by about 90%
then getting any ol C1 =)

See if you have 12 in a row on the back.... all fit together then its not a 3.06ghz part...not saying it wont reach 3ghz.
But check out the 3.06ghz review on this site here anandtech, they show a shot of the cap configuration under the chip.
My 1.8a looks just like that, my first 1.8a 2 of them both C1's had the 12 in a row just like you are stating.

there is like a old revision of C1's and new revision and thats what the 3.06ghz are!
gl on your oc

can someone link the pictures of difference in capacitor configurations for differnet stepings, and what model number on the chip denotes c1 stepping?

Caps arrangement of a B0 and C1 stepping (2.5 to 2.8GHz CPUs)

and one of the 3.06HT

I recently bought two OEM 2.66B (both C1s) and the first one i tested had the caps arrangement like a typical C1 and as such was able to OC stably to 3.00GHz. The second one however has a caps arrangement like in 3.06HT CPU and it OC's stably to 3.32 (166x20, 1.75V Vcore, 45C @load)!!!!

You definitely want to look for a C1 that has the same caps arrangement as the 3.06 CPU.

Just got a Dell pull 2.4B C1 stepping with the caps look like the third picture (3.06ghz one)

Won't pass 2.8ghz (will post, but can't get into windows) at any voltage below 1.75v (didn't try higher)
Somewhat disappointed at the OC, was hoping the theory is right, but I am not sure now.

FYI, my p4 info:
2.4B C1
SL6DV Phili
Week 45
Cap arrangement= the one shown here

HSF: Sunflower AVC
tested on a EPOX 4BDA2+ (845D chipset) with Corsair 512mb PC3200 XMS
2.7ghz (150FSB, AGP/PCI locked at 66/33, with 1:1 mem ratio) at default voltage

Does anyone think it's because of my Mobo or HSF? Too bad I have to return the chip on Monday (shhh... it's not pulled from my computer)

I think there is NO THEORY on this, because I have a C1 P4 2.0GHz with 12 caps and I overclocked it to 3.0GHz. I also sold (4) 1.8GHz 'C1' CPUs (one of them to Garster) that look like HT P4 3.06GHz and NONE of them reported to me being able to hit 3GHz. So, as with everything in overclocking, YMMV big time.
