As being one of the original people to discover this finding I think I should post my story and Theories =)
I decided to go from AMD to Intel cause I saw the overclockin potential, started reading up....
Purchased a 1.8A Retail from newegg.com not knowing retail boxes have older processors in them...but anyways It was ok
I got that B0 1.8A week 16 to 2.6ghz 1.7v idle
It had the normal capacitor configuration on the bottom of B0's that I have seen on others.
Few days later I keep reading in forums and stuff bout these new C1's flying around and I set out to find some 1.8A C1's in town...I called up PC club turned out they had C1 stepped 1.8A's and I went down picked one up was all excited I may hit 3ghz...
It was a C1 1.8a week 35 from malaysia.
I popped that C1 in and its max was 2.7@1.65v I was fairly dissapointed...as some were hitting 3.5ghz+ at this time.
I took it back for an exchange on another 1.8A C1 week 35 malaysia to really see if it was a crappy chip but NOPE...same EXACT overclock!
now...I did noticed that the capacitor configuration on the bottom of both of these C1's were identical to each other but different from the B0. I thought that was normal.
The next day I went to a different PC Club to just see what C1's they had thinkin they would all be the same at the stores, or close. I walked in loooked at them and got all excited cause they were week 45 C1's 1.8A's
I bought one on the spot, stuck it in my computer and INSTANTLY took it to 3ghz@1.68v idle I Was so happy I finally found a 3ghz one.
One thing I noticed, here is the interesting part. Before I stuck in my newest C1 I compared it with the week 35 C1 I was replacing, I looked on pinned side of the chip and WOW! the capacitor configuration was TOTALLY different...and I was thinking, "why on the same stepping though?"
Then comes to find out I am surfing through the forums at ocforum.com
One guy put up 3 pictures one of the B0 stepped capacitor configuration which matched my B0 and one that was the C1 cap configuration the 3rd one .... WAS a 3.06GHZ cap configuration picture...guess what my 3rd C1 I just mentioned had the SAME EXACT configuration on the chip!
My theory is...no matter what week it is, try to get a cap configuration of the same one on the 3.06ghz chip.
I think this C1 is the true overclocking C1...I am gonna go back to that Pc club and get another C1 with the 3.06ghz chip cap config and see if I can take that C1 further then 3ghz, most people have been hitting 3.5ghz...and if these 1.8A's are really 3.06ghz declocked with same cap config, thne they should all hit 3ghz+
I am thinking maybe mine was a 3.06ghz that didnt quite hit 3.06ghz so they sold it as a 1.8A instead, but I have a feeling there are full fledged 3.06ghz chips floating around (its obvious cause of these 3.5ghz+ clocks from 1.8a's).
So my ultimate suggestion and theory is, when buying a C1 get the same cap config as on the 3.06ghz chip!
Id say it increases your chances of hitting 3ghz + by about 90%
then getting any ol C1 =)
