C2D E8200 temps

I recently built my new rig featuring GA-P35-DS3 (rev 2.1) and E8200. I'm not planning to overclock, at least not now. The CPU is using the retail cooler and heat sink that came with it. The heat sink had three lines of thermal paste on its bottom.

Idle temps are about 42C, however at load the temps rise all the way to 75C. Is this normal with a retail cooler and heat sink? Everywhere I've read it should be around 42C at load, but I doubt they actually used retail cooler and heat sink.

Is there a problem in my setup?

Maybe you have too much thermal paste... or your temp sensor is screwed up. What program are you using?

I added no additional thermal paste since there was some on the heat sink. I've checked temps from BIOS and Gigabyte's EasyTune 5.

Are you reading the CPU temp or the CPU core temps? There is a known issue with the core sensors on the E8xxx chips being bogus, and Intel has indicated to use just the CPU temp for now.

I don't know which it is, because there's just one type of CPU temp being displayed in the BIOS and EasyTune 5. Is there a reliable CPU temp monitor that supports Vista x64? CoreTemp doesn't work with 64-bit Vista.

Also, I have dynamic fan speed set in the BIOS. I wonder if this sensor bug affects this in a negative way?

I think that with dynamic fan speed, those temps might be normal with the way it's set up in the bios.

Check the settings that dynamic fan speed is set up at, try turning dynamic fan speed off and setting the fan at 100% and see what your temps are like then.

For reading temps, download speedfan, and go to the forums for your MB's manufacture and see if any users on the forum have tips with the settings in speedfan for your motherboard

Just tested with dynamic fan speed off in the BIOS, CPU temps were the same in idle and load. Speedfan displays same temps as BIOS and Gigabyte's EasyTune 5. At least my system hasn't powered itself down when under load, so I guess there's no overheating issue.

Is this sensor bug in wolfdales something a BIOS update can fix? I can live with not knowing true CPU temp values, but still...

At this point, I don't think anyone knows. Intel claims the chips are fine, but pretty much everyone with the E88xx series is having issues with the core temps, regardless of motherboard, chipset, etc.

I have the same board ( rev 2.0) and cpu with zalman 9700. Temps are: idle core 1 32C, core 2: 35 C. Load: both cores at 42C. Using core temp 0.96.1.

Thanks BlueWeasel and everyone else. Seems like I have nothing to worry about as this seems to be the wolfdale temp issue. Thanks again.

I have the same motherboard but an e8400, and easytune5 says 29C idle, but coretemp says 46C. Seems to be fine for me...

I checked the cooler this morning and noticed one of the corners was loose, apparently it hadn't clicked on to its position. So I removed the cooler and installed it again, now load temps are 45C.

I should have re-checked the cooler in the first place, stupid me.
