i have a celeron300a in my second pc. it worked great on 450 but with this motherboard its impossible. so it's 300 for me. i was using a standard cooler that i got with it. but the thing makes a lot of noise to i decided to pull the plug... my question.. is it safe to run it at 300 with the fan off? its still on there... but im not letting it turn.

I have a friend who has a PII-300 with no cooler, only a big fan.

But, the Celeron has a different core (Mendocino compared to Klamath), and the integrated L2 cache may heat the CPU up.

I would say : try it without the fan. If it boots in Windows and does a few loops of 3dmark, you're all set. You'll not kill your chip by trying once and immediately turning it off when it crashes.

You should have no real problems running it at 300 without a fan. I don't recommend it, but it probably will work.

Reason behind this madness:
I've run a PII 333 w/o fan for a year with no issues. This was with a generic coolermaster-like HSF with both fans broken.

My roommate has run a PII 333 for over a year with a tiny heatsink that allows for no circulation. (Designed for use only with a fan, but the fan was broken). No problems there either, though I thought he was crazy for doing it.

I OCed a PII 300a to 450 using the same heatsink that my roommate had. To ease my mind I put on the only fan I had: an old Sunon 40mm fan (~5cfm?). Then I ran RC5 all day. Max temp in a 77F room with a jammed case: 53C. I replaced this setup after a week, and the HS was hot to the touch, which is never good. Now runs at 40C using a coolermaster-like HSF with one fan.

rule of thumb:
boot it, and keep your hand on the sink. if it gets too hot to touch, it's too hot
why don't you buy a quiter replacement fan? it'll only be a couple dollars, if that

The last CPU's meant to be run without HSF's were 386 SX's. If losing the C300 is of no consequence, don't put a working HSF on it. Otherwise, buy at least a GW FAB-24 dual fan unit for it, and thermal paste.

um, sure you can run the cpu without a fan at 300 MHz.

and if you need a new processor, make sure you run it with the fan on. =)
