Just got mine today!

First impressions: It's really thin, I was almost shocked at how thin it is. The surface is smoother and faster than my freebie RatpadzGS and the C4 stays put nicely on top of the Ratpadz. The color is a bit strange, I'd prefer black but the irridescent coppery black is kinda cool. I'd feel leery about taking the pad with me, just for the fear of creasing it. Off to play some UT2004 to test it out!

Speed _9 I am comparing this to ratpadz and the c4 is a lot faster especially in gaming enviornemnts i was able to slide the mouse cleanly across the pad. In addition I distance i had to move my mouse was shortened as compared to the ratzpad.
Responsiveness _9 I was able to easily move the mouse with speed and accuracy without any hiccups
Smoothness_I noticed that the mouse performed better on a hard surface than a soft one. When moutned on a softer surface the ease and smoothness descreased.
Durability/Lifespan_7 I am skeptical of the mouse holding up on its own without it becing mounted to a hard surface.
Innovation_8, By far the smoothest and easiest mousepad to use to date, only complaint is that it would perform better pre-moutned on a hard surface for durability and ease or travel.

Beta tester #35B here, and let me just say that this pad ROCKS! Now that we got that out of the way, allow me to elaborate...

I have been using the Logitech Mx510 Performance Mouse with the Ratpadz GS, and I already had some teflon tape (which I procured from fragware.com) in place, so I haven't used the disks (plus I need ffive and they only sent me four.) Needless to say I was skeptical as to whether or not this would make any difference what so ever, however once I got the pad, all of my preconcieved notions went out the window!

First thing, I just placed my NGen directly on my desk, and already was impressed by the lack of friction I felt. However, I could feel every little imperfection in the table even though I cleaned the desk thoroughly it was a bit annoying, so I placed it on the Ratpadz GS and, wow, what a drastic improvement! It's really hard to explain, but it's like there's no impedance on your mouse movement yet you have total precision control, and a slight tactile feedback. This thing is a dream to use, and I just love coming home from work (using a normal pad) to jumping on this and it feeling like silk!

Tody I thought the pad was looking a little "dusty", so I took the liberty of "dusting" it with Pledge, lol. I seriously recommend at least trying this (hell, you can always wash it off if you don't like it) I think you'll all agree that it makes an already great product better!

I have to say that I'm very impressed by the NGen, and will definately recommend it. The only gripes I have are that, although I like the rubber on the back, I would love to see the pad thicker (I'm kinda scared of creasing it, and I love a nice thick mouse pad), and maybe shaped like the Ratpadz. I would also like it to be bigger, but that will soon be available.

Congrats all around on a wonderful product, and thanks for letting me test! I was wondering if there was any way I could order the big one now, so I could cut it to fit my Padz, pleeease!

I've been using it for a couple of days so far, and so far, so good. my mini wireless optical mouse just came in today, and when i tried it out, the mouse worked horribly with the c4 mousepad. when i used the mouse on the plain table, it was fine. it was also fine when i used it on a normal mousepad. the pointer was very laggy and kind of uncontrollable with the c4 pad.

Beta Tester #23 I am going to be very blunt here.

OK, I really like the mousing surface. This thing is a very hard to beat combination of precision and slickness. I do, however, have serious concerns about its longevity.

I don't think I will wear it out, I think it will become unusable way before that. The concerns that others have about creasing is very well founded. I take my duties as a beta tester very seriously. And as a quality control manager, I have certain tendancies, when it come to usability qualifications. I have used some of these tendancies to abuse the surface. (I guess no one will ever accuse me of signing up for this to get a free mouse pad HeeHee.) I have traveled with this mousepad since one of the claims is portability. I have to say that portability shouldn't only mean that it is light and thin. Portability also means how well does it hold-up during travelling. This surface, although fairly tear resistnat is very poor at handling any type of accute pressure. depending on how the pressure is applied, the surface may crease or be left with permanent impresions. In addition to several creases from traveling, I have placed a piece of paper on the surface and written my name, two days later, I can still see my name in the surface.

The flaws in the surface caused by my testing have not resulted in any loss of precsion or slickness, which is quite suprising. Although I'm probably not sensitive enough to detect any changes.

The quiver idea may be "cool" or whatever, but is sounds like more crap I have to lug to the LAN and more crap I have to pack up and take home.

The last thing is that my hands sweat a little bit and the clamminess causes the surface to adhere to the bottom of my hand sometimes. This not only lifts a corner off the desk providing a potential creasing hazard, it is also annoying.

Other than my above issues, I really am enjoying using the surface.

i very much agree with everything spacehulk is mentioning. the mousepad is very vulnerable to creases and unusability. its usable durability is what worries me, so as a tester, i will have to test its longevity through hours and hours of use as i move it around my 6 computers at home.

I know I have a lot of 10's on this evaluation - I have no experience with other premium mouse pads, except the 3M Precise Mousing Surface, and this one is definitely better than that. This is the best mous pad I've ever used, but as noted, take that for what it's worth - I've always been too cheap to shell out the cash for a Ratzpad, Everglide, etc.
I did buy the original C4, and I like this one a whole lot more.

It was a really tough call on the teflon discs for me. Without them my mouse is definitely slicker, or lower friction. This gives great speed, but I felt like I could move the mouse just a tad too easily - I was worried aobout making accidental movements (though that did not happen in testing). With the discs, I felt that the mouse actually dragged a bit more on the surface, but that gave me better control...or at least it felt like it did - I really noticed no performance difference with or without teflon discs in gaming.
I know teflon discs make a big difference on normal pads and surfaces, but they just didn't seem to give that same sort of improvement on the C4.

I was suprised at how thin the pad is. I have not had any issues with corners lifting or creasing, but it's really only sitting on my desk. Rounding the corners would likely help with that, but I do wonder about traveling with this pad without a case, or something to prevent creasing. A normal mouse pad you can pretty much toss anywhere. For this one, I think I'm going to hang on to the tube it shipped in just in case I take it somewhere.

Initially I thought I'd prefer a thicker pad, but I got used to the thinness very quickly. I can, however, see that the thinness could cause problems for people who have desks with damaged or uneven surfaces. A big, cushy mousepad covers all of that up, this one won't.

The stickiness of the backing is EXCELLENT. This thing ain't moving anywhere! Heh, it was almost a pain to get the placement exactly right because each time I wanted to nudge it here or there the dang thing was stuck to the desk

I don't know how many variations of this pad the market would bear - if many, then you could offer different thicknesses, but if not, I wonder if it would make sense to offer a base for the pad - sandwich a thin piece of foam (like the thickness of the foam on a Dell pad) in between two sheets of the rubber backing. Place the pad on top of that - I don't think it would move at all, and that would be a potential solution to people who need or want a thicker pad. I suppose people might not like the 2 piece solution, but I'm just trying to think of ways to keep from having to have too much variation in the product line.

As many have said, I'm not wild about the color, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying this pad - in fact, I think this will make a good Christmas gift for all of my buddies, so I'll probably be ordering a few around that time.
I expect new and cool colors to come out the following January

Some people have mentioned concerns about longevity - if this product retails for close to what the original C4 sells for, I wouldn't be bothered at all about having to replace mine every 18 months or so. Most regular mousepads look like junk after that amount of time anyway

I really liked this product, and I only have a couple of minor concerns, that are related. The pad seems durable. I LOVE the new grip surface, it?s wonderful. However, the pad has a tendency to turn up at the corners just slightly. Also, the pad also seems susceptible to creases. Perhaps a very slightly thicker grip surface would help this? However I would suggest be very caustious about this. One of the coolest things about this product is it's thiness. I love how it just grips the desk, and it's so thin it's almost like you just refinished the surface of the desk with C4. I love the fact that it is so thin. I would rather have the small creases than have it be too thick.

I also like it better without the Teflon feet. The Teflon feet seem to slow movement for both of the mice that I use.

Even without this change I think that C4 Ngen is a wonderful product, and better than the original. I would also suggest that you consider offering a custom carrying case. I would keep it cheap, simple, but sturdy. Maybe something PVC like, (Black ?) with the C4 Ngen logo printed on it in Metallic bronze color as the mousing surface. Maybe consider selling this case seperatley?

Overall a really great product, I have enjoyed mine thoroughly.

If there was a custom size-fitting tube for each size pad, then I'd be more likely to carry it around and show it off.
The fact that C4, NGen can be easily cleaned is valuable to me____9____ Dusty, greasy mousepads suck, this surface leaves no room for grease, dust, or crumbs to hide, but a downside is that every crumb or greasy spot is VERY noticeable and needs to be cleaned pronto.

Just a couple things to add:

I mounted mine on my "old" RatpadzGS and cut out the curve at the bottom.

Like SpaceHulk, I have fairly sweaty hands and after a bit of usage my hand would tend to stick to the pad and lift it up.

The copper color isn't likely to please many. A safe bet on a good neutral color would IMO, be black or silver.

EDIT: Today I noticed that the edges are starting to fray and separate a bit and the surface is scratched up.

The fact that C4 NGen is portable is valuable to me (5) - i personally wouldn't buy a mouspad like that last C4 that wasn't "portable." Other than that, all mousepads are portable IMHO. I can easily carry any similar size mousepad with me no matter where I go or what kind of mousepad it is. I usually bring my 11x17" Hammer with me to LANs w/o a problem

The fact that the C4 NGen can be easily cleaned is valuable to me (8) - I do find this quite valuable, especially because the NGen seems to attract dust and dirt like none other. Again, I wouldn't buy a mousepad that wasn't easily cleaned.

I'm not sure that I care about custom shapes yet though. I don't see too much use in that especially b/c the pad is so thing anyway you can just set stuff on top of it.

Comments:

The only flaw I really see in this pad (asside from the fact that it matches nothing... which isn't really a problem) is the fact that it's so thin. Don't get me wrong. My current mouspad before the NGen was credit card thin. However, it was a bit stiffer and didn't deform from little crevices in my desk. At college this wasn't a problem; however, now that I've brought my rig home, I have noticed that the NGen doesn't take kindly to some of the marks on my desk. The surface is great - nice and smooth and very percise. I also love the backing. All mousepads should be designed with this type of backing. However, I really think the thickness of the pad takes away from what could be a very solid feel. I immagine it would be great on a glass desk, or mounted to an aluminum sheet; however, I didn't have those options.

The only thing that keeps the C4 Ngen from getting a 10 is that I find myself being a little less accurate in Tiger Woods 2004. In every other game and application, the C4 Ngen performs great.

Speed: 10 very good, i have very good control in games, hand drag is kept to a minimum.

Responsiveness: 10 works great, then again with the mx sensor it works on most anything.

Smoothness: 10 the feel seems better then the original c4, the finer grain gives more of a "control" feeling without adding friction it seems.

Durability/Lifespan: 8 on a flat desk with teflon mousefeet too... i don't see it wearing quickly. atleast it doesn't look like its worn at all so far. it is delicate if someone puts it over a table edge it can crease i guess. on most desks it just doesn't move or slide so thats not a prob. but for some people with curvy desks or just like to carry it around, it would be a bit delicate. easily solved by either cutting to fit or attaching it to a thin board or pad of some sort with spray ahesive or whatever though.

Innovation: 10 well for a mouse pad its quite good. before this all that came out were plastic/steel/glass pads of sorts that did ok, but don't match the c4 for basic feel, usability.

7. I was surprised by how thin it was. I had been expecting something with more volume, but this did not affect its performance. Initially, the NGen mousing surface felt nearly as quick as the textured surface of my func pad. The color was not the sleek black surface I am used to in mouse pads but it wasn't a big deal.
8. Stayed the same. My initial opinion was a good one, but not a great one. I tried to like the NGen but in the end I still consider the fUnc to be a superior product (see additional comments for more).
9. Felt about the same, but I would use the teflon pads since they are changable and prevent wear on the orinal mouse feet.
10. Ratings:
Appearance: 5. Not a cool looking pad like some other available products, but most people will purchase based on performance benefits.
Speed: 8. When it was pulled out of the tube, it was nearly as fast as my fUnc pad. I would say my fUnc pad is a bit too fast so the NGen speed was about perfect - however I would have to clean the NGen daily for it to maintain its initial speed and consistency.
Responsiveness: 7. Worked as well as any other gamers pad - all mouse movements were translated on my screen. But when the pad was not clean it would have slower areas where my mouse experience more friction.
Smoothness: 10. I will rate it highly here, but with the condition that it needs to be in a pristine state in order to perform at its best.
Durability: The surface isn't plastic so it should last longer than everglides, ratpads, etc but it would needed to get tested for much longer than a week to give an informed rating here.
Innovation: 7 The tacky backing is a nice feature. This is the first pad I've seen with a full teflon mousing surface, but that by itself doesn't seem like too innovative of an idea.
Portability: 3. I don't agree that the NGen is [easily] portable. While it is rollable, I think it lacks enough substance and finishing touches to be an item that one can just throw in a lan bag without worries.
Cleanability: 5. Sort of a loaded question. It's easy to clean but it also requires daily cleaning (in my experience) to perform.
Complete Mousepad: 8. I've always used a thicker mousepad so it would be my preference to see the NGen with a middle layer of plastic or foam. But compared to the previous c4 pad that I read about, it's nice to have a 'standalone' device in the NGen.
Large / Custom size: 10. The size of the sample was good for me, but I know alot of people who use a low mouse sensitivity prefer much larger pads.
Overall: Mouse Surface(5) Backing(9) The mouse surface required constant cleaning and that is not something I would be willing to do. The backing was very nice but I deducted a point because it picks up dirt easily (which could eventually reduce its overall effectiveness).
11. Improved Gaming Experience: No. Still prefer my original func surface after extensive testing.
12. I don't think the NGen should be priced above $10 with shipping.
13. Others obviously like this pad. I think it comes down to personal preference so I defintely wouldn't tell anyone not to purchase one.

Additional comments: The NGen defintely wasn't bad. For comparison, I would rate everglide/ratpad products a 1 or 2. I think the NGen lacks some of the finishing touches that a production level mousepad may offer. It's been mentioned that the pad is susceptible to creasing, and that the edges may get worn - and I'll agree. A hard outer rim similar to a fUnc would improve this area. I'd also like to see a thicker version of the Ngen - perhaps with a layer of hard plastic between the mousing surface and backing. This would also fix the potential creasing problem and would not affect its portability (ex. storing it inside a computer case or standing it upright against a case wall would be fine). In addition, it may bring it to the level of thickness I am used to (again, a personal preference). I ended up putting it on top of my fUnc pad for mousing surface testing. With the next revision I think you will have a winner. Finally, although it would add expense, I think some visible branding on the pad would be beneficial for advertising purposes and would add a professional look.

Looks like a good mousepad, however my personal preference is one not so slick. It felt like the mouse was in my hand and not on a surface which many like, but I dont. The style of how I aim and play is to use my wrist and not move my arm in which I need to feel how the mouse is moving and adjust that according to where i want to aim. I can't just feel how much I need to move if I cant feel the mousepad moving on the mousepad. Aiming with the wrist doesnt require a large mousepad and mousepads that are too slick dont work as well. Overall I wouldn't buy this mousepad because it isnt for me, however many people would prefer such a slick surfaced mousepad and I would reccomend this pad to others if asked.

Comments: Mousepad is great to worth it, very smooth, had some problems with my mouse actually working with the mousepad tho. Would take some time to adjust using this mousepad from the current 1 im using atm, but overall its a great mousepad just needs to surface redone.

REASON: why not? it's a great product. however it can be improved upon.

like many others i found the creasing to be a problem. perhaps if you made the bottom of the mousepad similar to dell mousepads it would be better. dells don't have as much of a problem with creasing and they also have a little more weight to them which makes them a little more durable. also even though it does have the sticky side its rather flimsy. my stapler pushed up against it and folded a corner by accident for about an hour when i was cleaning my desk. as a result there are several dark creases on one of the corners and the sticky side doesn't completely stick to the desk on that corner. i think the product should be made a little thicker. however im still impressed by the product. i think its a huge improvement over the original C4. thanks sher!

16.Should C4-NGen be released to market?? Yes REASON: Quality product. Can be portable when you need it. This is the greatest thing ever for gamers that have a glass top desk and optical mice. I was gonna buy the normal C4 and put it on something, but this I can actually use and not commit to a single surface.

I like the fact that it is thin, but it may be too thin/fragile in this state. I think a slightly thicker, maybe millimeter thick, rubber backing would help as well as give it a little nicer feel when picking up the mouse and putting it down.

7. Initial Reaction to this product: thinner than I had hoped, as I liked the thickness of the 1/8" foam. I did however like the backing, much more so than the foam as the foam slid around some.

The fact that C4, NGen can be easily cleaned is valuable to me 10, it does tend to get messy, but is easily cleaned.
The fact that C4, NGenä is a complete mousepad is valuable to me 9, Takes away the need/time/effort of having the consumer mount it themselves. Also makes it more marketable.
The fact that C4, NGen is available in large sizes 7, I like the larger size of this pad, but it is large enough for me. I was getting by with a 7.5"x8.5" foam pad with C4 mounted and it was ok, but larger is better, and this is big enough.
11.Rate the Mousing Surface overall 10 Rate the Grip Surface 9, while it does stay put pretty good, I have noticed along with others that it does tend to crease up in parts, forcing me to resit the pad. This was maybe a one in 3 weeks kind of event.
12.Improved my Gaming Experience undecided, as luck would have it 3 new games came out right at the birth of C4 next gen so I didn't compare the old games where I knew my performance. If to guess, I'd have to say my level of performance stayed the same.
13.I?d be willing to purchase C4, NGen for up to $12 per 8"x10" mousepad.

16.Should C4-NGen be released to market?? Yes REASON:It is a good product that fixes a couple of the flaws of the original C4: a pad on its own, mobile, and a great surface too boot without having to "make" a pad of your own with the adhesive C4.
17. Overall Rating: 9.5. I deduct .3 for the "rising" of the pad over time, and .2 for its tendency to attract lots of dust. Other than that: perfect. :thumbsup:

17. Overall Rating:_Totally awesome. Would be nice to have a little thicker backing to keep the surface from getting to wrinkly. I think I heard Adso say a small metal tube would be awesome for packing them around. Definetly a big difference when using the pad with the Teflon feet. Ive been using the original C4 since PDXLAN and I think that the surfaces actually helped reduce the pain in my gamer wrist. I wouldn?t mind having the option of purchaseing the mouse pad with pre attached to a ¼ inch piece of mouse pad material. In my continued use of the product Ill let you know if anything noteworthy comes about.
