Under the bill, parents can still choose not to vaccinate their children if they wish, but those kids won’t be allowed to attend public schools or daycares, and will have to either be homeschooled or enter a private school. There are a few exceptions: kids who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons are exempt from the ruling, and only 10 specific vaccines are required, including the vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella. Children who have special education needs will also still be guaranteed access to resources they need if they are booted from public school for being unvaccinated.

This doesn't really solve the problem though, since private gatherings (little league, birthday parties, etc.) will still expose the children to children who's parents wear tinfoil hats.

Also, it would be overkill if kids had to show up with immunization records for a play date,... but, if anti-vaxers argue that they should be allowed to do whatever they want, well, that applies to those looking to make sure their children don't catch the black plague.

Perfect. Nutters are still completely free to fuck up their own kids, but they can't fuck with the public. I fully support this.

Fantastic. Some of the greatest medical advances in human history and people are running away from them with their ignorance and putting vulnerable community members at risk.

It would be a form of child abuse if you withheld any other medication that was as effective and safe as vaccines if a child was ill.

But if people want to keep being ignorant, they are more than welcome to home school their child.

About freaking time. But, I suspect, it'll be on hold for a while as the nutters will inevitably file a lawsuit to block it.

And, to that I say, start charging the families whose children came down with measles or whooping cough with child neglect if the families had willingly kept their child from being vaccinated. (Exceptions for medical reasons, e.g., allergic to eggs)

I don't think the California governor has signed the bill yet.

But its not like California is leading the way. Mississippi and West Virginia already do this.

It's unfortunate that the greatest medium in human history for exchanging information, ie the internet, has often times produced the opposite effect by facilitating bastions of ignorance. Times were easier when we simply deferred to those society had deemed experts in their field, rather than people feeling empowered to do their own "research" on the internet.

If progressive states adopt this policy don't be surprised if they roll this back.

It is more like California was leading the way with the idea of personal exceptions, now they realized that was a major mistake.

yep. hope Colorado follows suit...

when i have kids, the school will be questioned about the amount of unvaccinated kids, and if i don't like the number, they will be going to school elsewhere.

Good.

Public health is too important. Some states, such as Mississippi never provided for a "personal exception" anyway. Although I am loathe to say the rest of the country should emulate the deep South for a variety of reasons, this is one area where I would emphatically do so. We do not need outbreaks of preventable disease, period.

CA does something right for once.

I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. It's like Florida doing something right. There is just... no way!

Great news. This exemption in CA has been the exception that swallowed the rule. At least in public schools, no longer will parents be allowed to endanger the lives of other peoples' kids because of moronic, irrational paranoia.

It's about effin time. My son's pediatrician won't even allow anti-vaccine nutters in her practice anymore as it potentially exposes the healthy infants who are too young to get MMR vaccines.

Hey man, don't you know all opinions have equal value.

Good. If you don't think your kids should be vaccinated you are too stupid to form opinions and you should stop trying to have them.

If I have kids they will be vaccinated. I'd still rather not have my kids exposed to the stupidity of the kids of parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids.

An article about this was posted on the Facebook of a local news station this morning. And reading through the comments I got a good idea of just how many fucking idiots who are anti vaccine that are out there.

You're right. I've noticed this, too. In some cases instead of reading stuff in a book written by a person with a clue we google it and we come upon lots of blowhards. I bet if you looked up alternative cancer treatments in encyclopedia Britannica it would said "not much, these all suck", but now you can find people recommending ridiculous diets, herbal supplements, blah rubbish and shit while your tumors spread throughout your body.

Bless her heart. I think people should be free to refuse vaccines, but they should be treated as potential carriers of disease.... because they are. You can't fly a dog to the US from Canada unless you have documents proving the dog had its shots. I tend to think humans are better than dogs and should therefore be held to a higher standard. If we start holding humans to lower standards than dogs, how long will it be until we start shitting on each other's lawns?

Is this really progress? I mean, when I was in high school in Texas, I failed to complete a round of vaccinations and was forced to get them or I couldn't continue to attend high school. This was over 10 years ago. Did we slide back so much since then?
