Muzzle loading flintlock pistols, single shot breach loaders, and revolvers are not semi-automatic. However, a revolver is a repeating handgun, just like a semi-automatic. The distinction lies in the method of operation. An automatic firearm loads a cartridge, fires, then removes the empty cartridge and loads another. The revolver allows for rapid follow up shots, but the mechanism does not unload the spent cartridge as part of the firing cycle, but rather brings around another chamber with a fresh cartridge in it.

It is all a matter of how you look at it. Maybe there is a legal definition that excludes revolvers.

I wonder what the State of California will use as a definition?

I have shot firearms before in the Military and later, but I don't own any firearms at the present. I have thought about purchasing another pistol, or shotgun but I just don't want to spend the money. It is a huge waste of money to purchase a firearm that you most likely will never use for its designed purpose.

I live in Illinois which is a kind of police state. Cant get a gun license without a photo and finger prints and a background check. Illinois is a police state.

I have a single action .22 revolver that wouldn't be considered semi-auto. As far as I understand it, anyway.

I also have a 1911 (it was my grandfathers officer's sidearm in WWII). I assume you know how a 1911 works (pull trigger and fire, you're already primed to fire again until you empty the magazine). That is certainly semi-auto.

A semi-automatic pistol is a type of handgun which uses a single chamber and barrel, with a mechanism powered by the previous shot to load a fresh cartridge into the chamber. One round is fired each time the trigger of a semi-automatic pistol is pulled.

A revolver, which uses multiple chambers and a single barrel, and a derringer, which uses multiple chambers and multiple barrels, also fire one round for trigger pull, but achieve this in different ways and as such are not classified as being semi-automatic.

So, a revolver is not considered a semi-auto.

This brings to mind an interesting point: Are revolvers covered under the new microstamping law in any way? Because if they think microstamping is going to solve crimes, then revolvers are the obvious go-to murder weapon since you don't leave behind any casings.
