Cable internet provider?

I'm thinking about to switch from DSl to Cable internet provider. Does Cable internet s much better than DSL(Verizon).

Generally, the answer would be yes, but it depends on your area where you want to get cable. If you have a lot of cable modem subscribers, then you might see a decrease in speed. I switched to cable from DSL and I love it. But you'll get varied answers from user to user. Check DSLReports for reviews on cable modem providers in your area. Hope this helps.

Generally the answer is NO. Read this article. One of the main reasons people would say that yes cable is better is due to the price/performance issue.

Usually cable companies wave set-up fees etc. and monthly rates are lower. I have had zero disconnects from DSL at work and I have had many many instances of interrupted service with my cable modem. Knowing all the facts though, cable is better for me from a price/performance standpoint. It also doesn't help the my cable modem provider caps upload speeds at 128kbps. Plus cable usually has more latentancy issues than DSL which really shows when playing online games (again the upload speed cap doesn't help).

My connections (DL/UL speeds):
DSL=1536Kbps/384Kbps ==> usually get around 100+ KBps
Cable=1024Kbps/128Kbps ==> usually get around 70KBps

My cable is more than half less $$ than the DSL connection. So it is worth it to me.

DSL=768Kbps/128Kbps ==> usually get around 60 KBps Cost $35

Cable=3000Kbps/128Kbps ==> usually get around 270KBps Cost $45

I actually have both services.

My Cable cost $10 more, providing me 4 time the speed of DSL.

How you know that it get 100+KBPS . Does it means, that DSL companies are lying? ONe more question Where did you get the DSl for jusy $35. I pay for Verizon Dsl 50

That is the question we must all ask JackMDS!! The DSL I quoted is $70/mth which had a $125 set-up fee. (Granted I got this installed almost 1.5 years ago! I wish my cable provider would un-cap their speeds.. the user base here is not very big.

Also to illustrate #'s

1024kbps= 128KBps (notice the kilo-bits vs. kilo-BYTES -- 8bits per byte).. minus packet overhead/loss gives you the remaining KB #. Browsers deal in KBps while connection speed (connected at) deal in kb. Since cable is a burst transmission and not steady this # my #'s are average usage. Sometimes in lower usage times I can get 80+KBps. I honestly would trade DSL for my cable if they were the same UL/DL speeds for the same price. But they're not. So I won't!!

Location, location, location. I have to use cable; DSL is not available. That said, I've had very good luck with my (Comcast) cable service while others have had complete horror stories about their (Verizon) DSL.

You pays your money, you takes your chance. I'm sure others are envious that you have two services available!

dsl is way too expensive here, cable is the only affordable broadband around here.

DSL service here is about $70 per month. I only pay $40 per month for my cable connection, and from talking to people who have switched fron DSL to Cable in the area, the speed they get from their cable connection is almost always 4 to 5 times faster. The only way I would give up my Cable is if they really go thru with the planned VPN lockout. I'm not going to pay $100 per month just to have access to my company's VPN twice a month. If that goes thru, and I hear it already has in some places - Comcast seem to be the one pushing it -then I would have to take a close look at DSL. I don't see my company ponying up the extra $$$ to allow me to keep the faster/more reliable cable connection.

I would ask some current users around in your area. I live near Dallas and Charter provides the cable for my area. It is not so much an issue of speed for me as QOS. I frequently have outages, have gone through several cycles of great bandwidth getting slower then great bandwidth as they slowly upgrade their equipment. This has not been an issue with the DSL providers in my area but unfortunately I am outside of their range so for me it is cable or nothing.

Cable Modem service providers usually don't have any type of contract you need to sign. Why not just get one for a couple of months.. compare the service.. if you don't like it then just cancel it. If you like it cancel your DSL.

The area I live in I have a 2600kbps/384kbps cable modem service which usually gets 1500-2600kbps down and steady 400kbps up but the DSL service avalible can only reach 384kbps/384kbps for $10 more!

It probably will always be dependent on your location..

No you don't have to purchase a modem for cable internet service. Most broadband service will provide a rental included into the price of the service.

It's also sometimes possible to purchase a cable modem with a MIR that covers most of the cost, though I've found that this is true for new signups (not all the time, though!). That's how I got mine.
