I tried to cancel my cable tv today only to find out that if I do I will also lose my cable internet service. Do all cable providers work this way? Seems like it should be illegal to require a person to buy product A in order to get product B.

I have comcast here in michigan and I had a cable modem with no cable tv for over 1 year, you just have to pay $10 more per month. Funny thing is I just moved, moved my cable modem with me, added digital cable to my services, and now my bill is $2 cheaper!

I have a cablemodem without cable TV service. They give you a $10 discount if you have both.

Mine is Charter cable. The thing that really annoys me is that I called about a month ago and ask them specifically about this and they told me you did not need to have cable tv to get cable internet. Now that I actually called them to cancel I get a different story.

My friend signed up for cable internet access when he didn't have cable TV. He gets cable TV for free because of the cable internet setup though. I guess you can't have cable internet access w/o cable otherwise I'm sure his would've been disabled - the question is, how do you avoid getting charged? =P

Wingznut PEZ, do you not have cable or do you just not use it. The cable TV line/service might be there. Mebbe yer just not using it?

Cable companies do this because when you get Internet access, most of the time you also get cable, and would be getting it for free otherwise.

I have Charter Digital Cable right now with Internet Access to come soon. I dumped DirecTV for Digital Cable because I got the more diverse channel selection for less per month (and no dropouts during Alabama style thunderstorms).

I'll go for the Cable Modem and get rid of ISDN and end getting raped by BellSouth.

But it sucks they won't let you have both.

AT&T @home in NW WA State...
I have both now, both full price--

In the past I have had only the Internet service and no TV.

During that time I did attach a coax splitter and hooked up my TV just to see if there was some signal in there-- NO!

4 years ago, before the network was upgraded for intwernet and digital tv service, you could pull 4 channels off of the cable coming into the house without paying for anything- it was like FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBUT all were a bit fuzzy.

I am 70 MI N of Seattle and 70 MI S of Vancouver, so a regular tv antenna picks up nada.

I am not paying for cable, as I have DirecTV satellite. As for the signal, they put an inline filter on the side of my house.

I don't work for the cable company or anything, but I believe that if your cable company does not install diplexors, they can't give you cable modem access without giving you cable TV. My cable company is like that.

If that is the case, they may force you to pay for the cable tv, since they can't prevent you from getting it if you have a cable modem.

In my case, it actually LOWERS your total monthly charges to subscribe to cable tv along with your cable modem. It's actually $5 a month cheaper this way (Basic cable is only $4.95 if you have a cable modem).

I think it's completely different if you have digital cable, but I don't know anything about that.

I must admit, when I had just a cable modem and no cable TV, I tried taking the cable from my modem and plugged it into the TV and POOF!, free cable TV, all 70-some channels. So I installed a splitter, hooked my modem and my TV to the wire, and had TV and Internet for my Internet only price. They charged $50/month for just internet so I figured I deserved it

At my parents house, we have DirecTV , no cable. When they got @home installed, the guy went on the pole and said he had to remove the filter in order to get the cable modem to work. So while getting the cable modem, we ended up getting a few cable channels as well.

So if it's true that you can get free cable TV if you have a cable modem and plugged it in. Is the reverse true? Could I pay for cable TV and get free cable modem? Hypotheticaly speaknig of course...

I have Comcast @home. Also, the reverse doesn't work. When I moved into my new place it had basic cable but no cable modem. I had to wait a week to get it installed so I tried hooking up my cable modem but it didn't work. What a torture going back to 28.8 for a week!

I know how you feel. When we bought our house, both the local phone and cable companies told me that broadband was available at my new address. Come to find out they were wrong. I went about eight months on a 56k, before I got broadband back.

Well, getting free cable tv depends of if your cable company installs the diplexors or not. If they do not, then you probably can get free cable TV.

The opposite, however, is definatly NOT true. You can't get free cable modem internet access by getting cable TV.

Your cable internet access has to be provisioned at their end (they can access your modem from their end, and configure it). You're not simply tapping into a signal that is being transmitted blindly to you, as is the case with cable tv.
