Just got Charter Pipleline with 512 downstream/ 128 up...its all they offer here at the moment.
Is that fairly decent?
I'm getting about 28,000kbs downloads, and 15,000kbs uploads with a generic Ambit modem. The modem is running off of USB, as I cant get it to work with my Sohoware 10/100 nic.

Is this modem any good, and are my dl/ul speeds where they should be considering my connection?

Thanks

Your speeds are a little slow. D/L speeds differ from speeds advertised though(not sure from post if you know or not, if you do all apologies). They rate their speed at bits per second, whereas D/L's are rated as bytes per second. So, since there's 8 bits in a byte, you D/L speed in general should be 1/8 your Charter connection.
However, the place you might be D/Ling from could be across the world, slow speeds then. If you contact Charter they may have you run local speed tests on their servers to verify speed. I would recommend that since you speed from this example seems a little slow.
USB shouldn't affect your connection speed because it's transfer rate is higher than you D/L speed.

If your Modem is dual, i.e. Ethernet or USB, you are better off using the Ethernet.

Your numbers are mixed up 28,000Kb/sec. is 28Mb/sec. ???

1 Byte (B) is 8 bits (b).

A service of 512Kb/sec. (b=bit) is a service of 64KB/sec. (B=Byte).

Typically a service like this would yield a download of 45-55KB/sec. (B=Byte).

If your "pipe" delivers 28KB/sec. (B=Byte) it is on the slow side.

I never used USB Modem, but you can try the following.

Download DrTCP: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dslre
ports.com/front/DRTCP019.exe">http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP019.exe</a>

Run the progie, it will show the current settings. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good, you can always change to your original values.

The following is an Example of setting optimized for Cable Internet connection.

Tcp Receive - 255552

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

MaxMTU - 1500

However, your mileage may vary.

thank you for the info guys. For some reason this modem will not work with my SOHOware PCI 10/100 ethernet card. WinXP recognizes the card and assigns an IP address to it, when I have the modem plugged into the card.
Unfortunately its not the IP address that the modem shows, when I have that connected to the USB port.
Wont work at all with the NIC.

Ive tried manually entering the IP address, and theSubnet address to no avail.
The NIC works fine on its own, so I know that it is working correctly.

charter pipeline is cable ...if I am correct...right?

if so...then call your ISP and tell them you want to use your ethernet NIC....what they will then do is register the MAC address of your Soho Ware NIC...and you should then be fine. Most cable modems authenticate connection via MAC address of the NIC that the modem is being plugged into....

How do I find out what the MAC address of my NIC is?
Also, I believe the cable tech tried a couple of times to do that before he resorted to using the USB connection on the cable modem, instead of the NIC.

I wasnt here when he installed this, my wife was.

Fixed it! LOL
I dug out an old generice NIC from my parts box and popped it in. Works great, and there is a pretty substantial difference in speed now.
Thanks for all the help.
