Finally got broadband through cable yesterday and it seems pretty fast (except on this forum) I did a bandwidth test online with 2wire and got the following result. 53.5 Kbps This dont look very good. It a assymetrtcal hookup like adsl 788/128. I am in the first 100 that have gotten this service here through Charter communications, I even paid extra to have a extra cable installed, the bandwidth does not seem very good. What do you guys think?

Your bandwith isnt going to be good with every website you go to. Its only going to be as good as that website can upload it or what they allow.

Right now Anandtech is limiting bandwith unless your a paid subscriber.

But your 53.5 connection might not be a true indicator. Try going to dslreports.com and running some of their connection tests. Also do some downloads from some fast sites.. see how fast you download. Its going to vary depending on your connection, where your connecting, the internet.. etc.

And compared to some people on cable.. no thats not very great.

What did they tell you your connection speed might be? What is the download/upload ratio max?

That number (53.5Kbps) sounds more like an Upload speed on cable than a download speed.

If you were really at that rate, I think you would feel like you were on a dial-up.

With Comcast (yes, I know you are on a different cable provider), download speeds are frequently above 1,000Kbps..

Try a speed test at dslreports and see if it says the same.

Edit: LOL, I guess I type slow

A 788Kb/sec. (b=bit) service. If not well optimize will yield 53KB/sec. (B=Byte) Download, if this is the case it is not so bad.

788/128
For the life of me I could not find the one on Dsl reports. I did try anotherone and got 4 Kilobytes per sec. Am I wrong in my thinking that is 32 KB/sec as there is 8 bits per byte? If this is the case it is pretty good. I dont know how they are capping the service as they offer several bandwidth plans. 128/128--256/128-788/128 - 1.5/384

for the speed test at dslreports.com, look the the 'DSLR TOOLS' button(link) on the left

it takes you to a page outlining lots of possible testing. You want the JAVA based (free) tests.

the speed test is good and the free port scan (security check) is very helpful too.

On the same page with the speed test you ran, there is also a "tweak test" try that...

(I was just playing with it when your replay pinged in LOL )

You can try to check the parameters of your connection setting.

Download DrTCP from DSLreports, and use it to adjust your settings.

Link: DSLreports.com - DrTCP

The following is an Example of setting optimized for Cable Internet system.

Tcp Receive - 513920

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping ? No

Selective Acks ? Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole ? NO

Max Duplicate ? 3

TTL ? 64

MaxMTU ? 1500.

Your mileage may vary.

If it does not help, don't be shy, call your ISP, and complain.

I downloaded the tweak prog. that was suggested and make them. I am getting 73 down 117 up.
I am not shy about complaining to my ISP I just want to make sure I am not complaining when all is within reasonable speeds. I will do the tests again about 3:am cst and see what difference there is.
Thanks guys

All the bandwidth tests, IMO, are just a rough gauge of your throughput. I have had maybe 2 out of 20 come close to what I can get on a download from a quick site. Here is my test. got to http://ftp.netscape.com, click pub, communicator, english, 4.79, windows, complete install. and then the executable. Theres several routes you can go, but the communicator download, or any contemporary Netscape browser download will be big enough to show what your connection can really do. Except for a VERY few times, around 5-7 eastern is the worst time to do it, I get extremely consistent download speeds, around 155 KB, almost without exception. Obviously there are variables, but for me, this has been very very consistent. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with ktwebb. These speed test sites are just a guide. Most frequently they are WAY off by a factor of 3-4 times. Generally your broadband performance is limited to quality of the hosting site and any tweaks (aka getting a real IP stack, thank you microsoft...you bastards from evil hell. what those "tweaks" are nothing more than forcing the stack to comply with the interned standards ala RFCs).

53 Kilobits/sec is pretty poor though.

same test as on dslreports but alot better bandwith.

so are you getting 73kbps down or are you getting 73KB/s down? big difference there in things really.
