Cable Modem ... uncapping 512Kb limit?

If you've got a cable modem you'll know that it is limited to 512Kb MAX ... but I heard that the cable modem line is capable of upto 2Mb. And there's a way to remove the 512Kb limit ...
Anyone know how?

I doubt it since most cable modem ISP's cap you at the headend (their end of the pipe) using your IP/MAC address.

you can't, because they do the capping on THEIR servers, not at your modem

I have a 512Kbps upload cap too, although I have a 10MBit download, and if I had a faster ethernet card, I could probably do more

512kb upload cap?!?! Man, that makes my 128kb upload sound really crappy. I think Charter@home needs to get their butts in gear and increase ours here...

OK ... If I know the guy who works @ the ISP to do the uncapping at the server side ... what are the major downfalls?

I have AT&T @Home in the Bay Area, Ca. with a LanCity cable modem. Apparently, AT&T caps my upload at the modem and I am able to bypass that upload cap at 128kbit. I've seen speeds up to 300KByte/s upload. Fastest download I've seen is ~ 500KByte/s.

Nullity,
Yes those Old LanCity "modems" can be uncapped... They aren't actually Modems, but Bridges
and that is why you can upcap them...
You'll be asked to upgrade soon... It'll be manditory when they switch to the newer protocal
which the LanCity modems aren't capable of running...

I hope for your sake they don't, but, I've seen this happen in about 4 different areas which
used the old LanCity modems.....

I'm sure if you know someone that works for the ISP that they can probably remove the cap for you. However, if I was the system admin for the ISP, I think I would notice someone leeching files left and right at 2mbps while everyone is capped at 512k.

I can't deny that ISP's cap cable modems to milk more money out of you for more speed. However, one of the reasons ISP cap cable modems is to fit as much people as they can into their bandwidth pipe and still have advertised speeds. If I remember correctly, @Home enforced a 128kb upload cap since too many people where running FTP servers with their cable modems and as a result were raping all of @Home's upload bandwidth.

The Cap limit is usually placed on the local UBR itself! On the UBR it will store the Data for each Cable Modem's Mac address and give it access to a limited cap. I have heard of a software in the works from crackers that can hack into the ubr and lets the user change their Cap limit assigned to their MAC address. I doubt if its true as each network is different on how they set the cap limit. We will just have to wait and see!

True about those LanCity, the cable techs use to bring those guys to us from the factory and we flash the bios off those with our data. but we phase those out slowly for 3com modems.. this is Cablevision @Home in LI NYC. Those lancity were bulky and ugly.. Removing cap is usually at the headend.. gotta know someone there..

You guys do know that uncapping is illegal... look @ speedguide.net heh.. surprised the mods haven't locked this thread yet. Even if you could uncap the modem (which you can't now a days btw..) they would notice very quickly due to the fact that a lot more bandwith would be leaving then coming in... all your neighbors would call and complain.. etc. etc. etc. You'd be stealing the bandwith from everyone on your node and the cable company would cut your service off faster than you could say but I just...

I uncapped my modem a while back but some idiot went and posted that it could be done in the @home newsgroup for my city. Guess what it went away in a big hurry. Only worked on Lancity modems. I had 50K/s upload before uncapping and 350K/s afterwards. All the little program did was allow the modem to use a gateway other than the one specified by my ISP. Worked great for about 5-6 days then some jerk spewed the news and it all went away. I hope you're reading this thread and realize what a ass you are.

Just because I might have an uncapped cable modem doesn't mean I'm running servers. Heck, I hardly even upload but when I do upload something (say a 3mb file), its nice to watch it upload at 200KBytes/sec and be done in less than 20 sec.

Anyways...just because someone might have an uncapped upload doesn't mean that person will abuse it.

MTP, I highly doubt you are getting 10 megs/sec down, have you actually done any accurate speed tests?

I care to disagree. By uncapping your modem and uploading ANYTHING, you are in theory abusing the bandwidth. With an uncapped modem you are basically stealing bandwitdh from other people on your node when you upload or download. I guess you can justify it by saying you are only doing occasional uploading and not running a FTP server where the bandwidth is raped 24/7, but no matter how you look at it your actions are still grounds for termination of service.

The answer to all those who seek instructions on uncapping their cable modem is:

Be glad you're not on 56k. There is absolutely no way to uncap a 56k. We understand you have the "speed bug", you want more, more, more. There is no way to uncap your modem now. Please go away. Thank you, and good night.

yeah. 128kb/s = 16kB/s; 512kb/s = 64kB/s. small "b" means bits. big "B" means bytes.

which means shaw@home prolly has something like 512kb/s cap. Rogers@home is similar.

i would assume the rest of the @homes are the same but apparently not.

Just be grateful for what you have guys...and uncapping is ILLEGAL, so I wouldn't recommend doing it.
