I have RR in central Ohio. Advertised speed is 5mps down and 768kps up. I get the down speed every now and then but its usually about 2-3. The upload , I only get avg about 300.This is with a black motorola modem that they (Time Warner) provide.

I have heard that in Dayton Ohio they have 5mps up and down. Not sure if its true though.

Oh, one thing, I asked the tech who installed my @Home connection about the upload speeds. He was one of the more knowledgeable techs that I've had the pleasure to run into. Worked for a networking company out of Denver that was contracted by @Home to do hook-ups in N. Colorado since they are swamped with orders. But anyway...

I asked about this and he said it's purely an artificial cap placed on the connection to prevent people from running web servers. In my case, he claimed that it's placed on the line, not in the modem.

I have an RCA modem - I can't remember the model number... it's not the best they offer... it's the next one down.

BTW, he brought up an IP address for the cable modem with an HTML config screen. I didn't write the address down, and now I can't find this address anywhere? Does anyone know the IP address of RCA cable modem's config screens?

What everybody has told me. The cap is in either the modem bios or a data cap, in the switching units. I have been told that the the modem bios settings can be altered using telnet. I dont see how capping the line in the service we use here in Las Vegas would be usefull since they monitor your account usage and have a data tranfer amount of 7.5 gig a month, so running a server would not be very practical on our cable network.

H.Yunta: No, it's not - and you are right that's an excellent suggestion. Unfortunately I just upgraded Windows to 98SE and this must have blown it away (since it's blank).

Gerbz: Actually, I think that's the address that he typed - if not, it's very close. He typed 192.168.X.X - I just can't remember the last two digits except that they only had "1"'s and "0"'s in it. But when I follow the link you posted it's dead to me. I'm wondering if it's not the router that I'm using...

BTW, the modem (now that I'm at home) is an RCA 205.

I have RR in So Cal. Its owned by Time Warner. MY downloads range from 1.5 mbps to 3 mbps depending on time of day. My upload is capped bad. never get above 32k! I was given the 3Com modem that looks like a fish with hug bug eye lights. I know they recently switched to a new white modem.

RR here in hawaii. Before, a local user would get 50kbps, but now its only like 25kbps. But usually, my uploads are never faster than 20k. Damn RR

I am using Rogers @home $34.95 per month. DSL not available yet in my neighbourhood, but I am thinking of switching over to DSL fast, cause my TV Cable rates are HUGE.. I would save more going to ExpressVu or Look, but then my @home would increase, so gotta jump to DSL when I dump TV Cable too

Warcleric, I am on @Home here and I have no 128k cap. I upload to several servers at work and I get roughly 600k-2mbps. It fluctuates quite a bit but never lower than 600k. Downstream with DAp I get anywhere from 2-4mbps. I used to be a network engineer for AT&T @Home here in Columbus and I know it's not capped here. It may be in other cities but not here right now anyways. There is talk of them capping it at 128 but I hope that doesn't come about. Just my experiences with it..........

[Because i know for a fact every RR user from hawaii to new york has a upload cap of around 16KB. Possibly trinitron already had the file in his cache... Otherwise i dont beleive it. ]

A fact? Please. I've worked in the same building as RR's Tech support and was trained for it, it's NOT capped at 16k. In fact, I'm using Tampa's RR right now, and I upload at about 40k/sec average, and sometimes higher in the evenings. Each Road Runner market is independantly operated. Just as in the St. Pete/Tampa area. In fact, Tampa cable modems (motorola) won't work properly in St. Pete, and vice versa.

PM,

@home in Colorado caps their uploads at 128kbps. Every ad I've seen and all the data I've researched trying to get cable for my house has said that is the cap.

As for downloads, I don't know if they are capped or not.
