Cable Modems... need some advice ASAP...

Well.. i'm gonna try n order service tonight.. but I think I will get my own modem. The modem at CC, motorola SB4100, is this a good model? my thoughts are it is better than leasing and cheaper than the 199 they want for the toshiba modem they are selling.. motorola at CC is only 100 bucks..

Is there a large performace difference between modems? I know back in the dial up days.. modems varied quite a bit and you did get what you paid for..

Please let me know ASAP.. this is for ATT broadband.. FINALLY AFTER years of waiting..

where did you come up with the price of 199 for the toshiba cable modem? they have it at newegg for 113. Personally I like the toshiba better my father has the surfboard and I have the tochiba I get faster speeds his Pc is faster than mine also and we live next door to each other! So I would say that the toshiba is faster! i had a scientific Atlantic and the toshiba was faster than that also!

With some isp's you will get faster downloads with Toshiba compared to Motorola. AT&T however is not of them. Their service is capped at 1.5 down so the modem won't make any difference in terms of speed.

I would recommend the Motorola though (I have the SB3100 - it works great) because it has on-board diagnostics. This helps in the rare case that something goes wrong with your connection.

well its 199 because thats what ATT has it listed for.. its an option to buy from them. its not toshiba for sure.. but word from my relatives and friends is that thats what they got... thats why i went else where to buy instead of from their jacked up prices... and CC is the best thing cuz its close and i'm getting an install in 4 days.. just ordered.. was soo quick... so i dont really want to wait for shipping unless its gonna make a big difference in performance.

motorola all day.... toshibas are nice... but the diag utility on the SB4100 wins hands down..


and for $99 the SB4100 is a great deal.....

I just went to RoadRunner from DSL and I got a Toshiba modem. I don't know if it's the best but I do get 2500 down/350 up or so on the average. After 10:00 I start to get 2900 to 3000 down. I used to get 768 down /204 up on DSL. Good enough for me!

The reason I went with the Motorola SB4100 is because I like the "Standby" button on the front panel and also the 12V power supply adapter is internal (instead of having a bulky transformer to plug in) so I just have a normal 120V plug to my surge protector ............ nice and clean!

I am fortunate enough I guess to use almost any one that I want. I have used several including Cisco, Toshiba, RCA, Samsung, D-Link, Motorola 3100 and now testing a 4100B. They are all pretty much equal in terms of performance with the exception of the Cisco. It is about 15% slower than any of the others and this is with a 3 MB DL cap.

The Motorola is my pick, but the Toshiba is also very solid and reliable. Neither of them have any known hardware weaknesses. I give the edge to Motorola because they are a little better at dealing with noise than the others. Cisco would be my last choice, but my results may have been less than stellar due to the fact that the 904 has a built in router.
