I recently upgraded my computer and don't seem to be getting the necessary speed out of my connection.

I currently have a Motorola surfboard SB5120 modem that Ive had for about 3 years and would like suggestions on new modems that could increase the data transfer rate.

Something with a max cost of 200 dollars maybe?

Thanks to everyone who reads this and can help.

What download/upload speeds to you have with your current cable service? I have the Mot SB5120 and it's a DOCSIS 2 modem..so it should handle about 38 Mbit down / 27 Mbit up, which is way higher than most cable companies. DOCSIS 3 modems are out...I think, but I doubt your modem is causing the slowdown. You may want to check your computer settings and see if you need to disable some background services or QoS, etc...

Edit: BTW, an easy way to check your speed is using Speakeasy Speedtest (you need flash)...just google it and see what your speeds are.

using that speedtest I get 12397 Up and 2735 DL speed. I'm not 100% positive but I think my current cable internet is supposed to be 10mbps

I will be upgrading to 15 soon however, for gaming.

that speedtest was pinged from San Diego to San Francisco.

12397 Up is 12 mbps download and 2735 is 2.7 mbps upload and you said you have 10 mbps internet so you are getting the download speed.

If you are on comcast if could just be the powerboost though. It seems like you are getting the speed and everything is working fine. What makes you think it is not working properly? You also said you are upgrading to 15 mbps for gaming... upgrading to 15 mbps won't help at all. Gaming is all about ping/latency. Download speed will not affect it at all.

The SB5120 is one of the newer DOCSIS 2.0 modems comcast has been giving out. It should be fine. Comcast is rolling out DOCSIS 3.0, not available in all areas, which has speeds of 20 mbps or 50 mbps depending on which package you pick and costs quite a bit. For that you would need/could rent a DOCSIS 3.0 modem for comcast.

If you need more troubleshooting or think your area has a slowdown you can try posting on the broadbandreports.com website. Go to the forums and they have a comcast high speed internet forum and can help you check to make sure your signal levels are fine and such.
