Cable or No Cable

Two of my roommates don't want cable, one wants it really bad, and I could go either way. I really just want to be able to watch some Aggie sports, some comedy, and some Discovery/History.

Hulu/Southparkstudios takes care of most of the comedy, and I guess I could just read a book instead of watch Discovery/History. But how can I make sure I get access to most of the football and basketball games? Are there any places I can stream in online? I'd be willing to pay especially if it's cheaper than cable.

Digital Cable (with unnecessary music channels) + 8mb Internet = ~$96

8mb Internet = ~$34

there's no non-digital basic, bare-bones cable?

I couldn't imagine it, myself... sure, everything's on the internet if I'm willing to try hard enough, but it's a lot easier just to lay on my couch, hit a button, and have my dvr sitting there with recorded shows to watch.

can you access espn360.com? I watch most of the SEC regional broadcasts on there for both bball and fball.

edit: channelsurfing.net also plays most of the same games as espn360 if your provider doesn't carry it

This week I'm getting rid of my Digital Cable TV/10mb Internet. It's costing me $135/month and I have decided it isn't worth it for the money anymore. Frontier is coming out next week to hook me up with a IP phone with unlimited calling in the US and a 1.5 mbps DSL connection for $40/month.

There was nothing cheaper for TV/Internet? If my roommate (1 of 4) didn't want phone service (which he is paying for entirely), I would have signed up my apartment for the Comcast double play package (digital cable + 6/1.5 internet) for $66/month instead of the $100/month triple play package (but again, roommate pays entirely for the phone).

Since a majority don't want it, just get either (or both) a) netflix subscription, b) antenna (and a digital converter box if needed for February's switch). You should also try and hook any existing cable line to a tv to see if you can pull any channels through anyway. If your roommate really wants cable, have him pay the extra himself and just have it set up in his room so other people won't use what he's paying for.

Just order cable internet and put a splitter on the jack with the modem. Time warner can't block it since it is an all or nothing to get internet working. The installer told me this and have had cable forever though I don't watch it except for football.

I canceled cable TV a few months ago and am just paying for internet.
I couldn't be happier. I can catch some of the shows online.
On top of that, $50 extra per month to spend on stuff.

That is not right. They can and do block everything else. It's called a trap which is nothing more than a glorified filter. The only reason this has gotten around in the first place is that tech's are to lazy to take 3 minutes and put them on.

Internet + 2@time netflix sounds like a reasonable compromise since 2 already don't want the added expense of cable.

I've been living in my new place for about a month now without cable and have no intention of installing it.

1- everything is online. LOOK for the folder called 'everything'
2- you end up doing so much with the time you no longer waste

They screwed up my cable install the first time so I should definitely give this a shot. OR maybe not

I'm also dropping my cable subscription this morning. The only shows I really watch are Lost and Heroes and I always end up downloading them anyway.

And for those boring, rainy Sunday afternoons, I've got a bunch of DVDs that I bought a year ago that I haven't even watched yet.

I'm planning on talking to my two non-cable-supporting roommates and tell them I don't care for cable. I don't think we even have a tv in our living room. We have a projector, but that is mainly for movies. I can't access ESPN360.com normally, but I went through FreeTVOnline.com and it works. I just hope I'm not getting some downgraded version. I guess I'll find out next week when football begins to play. So are most games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU streamed on ESPN360 as well?

err, skip the cable. It's not worth 62 dollars!

That and the major channels are over the air digital (most HD as well)



me and my wife passed on cable in our new house and use over the air digital TV. between that and dvd's cable just cost WAY to much IMO for what you get today.

Yep, I built a HTPC with a BR player & dual HD tuners for OTA HD, only things I'm going to miss are Sci Fi & CNBC when my DTV sub expires this winter & I cancel it.

Most folk can get very good OTA HD with rabbit ears.
