Cable Splicing: recommended or not?

cable splicing seems like a smart idea for cooling and easy access, but wouldn't there be some data loss? or some kind of distortion?

I never had any problems "rounding" them. (floppy, ATA33, 50 pin SCSI, 68 pin Twist-n-Flat)

If you are refering to rounding cables, I've never had any problems either. Just be careful not to slice into the insulation when spliting them up.

I just rounded an IDE cable for the CD-ROM. Afraid to do the hard drive. Why do manufacturers make them flat if rounded seems to be better in terms of cooling, airflow, etc? Cost? I think I might be willing to pay a little bit more for a rounded cable that has a more professional look than mine do. I blocked them and used zip ties to hold it all together.
