Cable to Ethernet Issues...

My ethernet on my modem went out, so I switched from ethernet to USB to access the internet. I tested the modem on 2 other computers, both allowed me to use the internet through USB only. The ethernet connection will not work with 3 computers, but the USB will. The modem was a SB4200 Motorola Surfboard. I assumed that since the ethernet won't work on 3 computers, which the ethernet did previously, that the modem was loosing its capabilities. I drove down to my internet provider and bought a new modem through them, an SB5120 Motorola Surfboard. I then tried to install all the drivers and use the ethernet. Notta. I can only access the ethernet trough USB. I need the ethernet to connect to a wireless router in our home.

This is driving me nuts. I have even tried different cable outputs in my home.

What should I try?

go to control panel--> system mananger--> device manager--> and network adapters make sure your drivers and stuffa re installed ...

It says that the hardware is working properly. I have an Intel Pro/100 VM Network Connection and the Motorola Surfboard modem under network adapters.

From what the OP said in the first post, he tried his Ethernet on 3 pcs ... so it is not a pc issue
The Modem either needs to be RESET or replaced
The modem he has is just a modem .. router is seperate
He may need to reboot the Router

How do you reset a modem?

To reset the modem: Try unplugging and plugging in the cable modem power cord in the AC wall outlet to restart the cable modem. Restarting the cable modem may take 5 to 30 minutes.

Are you sure the CAT. 5 cable is okay?

May have bent it or otherwise broke a few pairs off inside...

Try a new cable.

On one of the three computers, I have noticed that under device manager, there is no network connections tab. This probably means that I am missing the ethernet drivers for my onboard LAN.

I am running a MSI Neo4 Platinum and it uses Marvell LAN. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/d...dvr_list.php?part=1&kind=2&CHIP=2&ID=3 here is where I can download these Marvell drivers, but I cannot install them after I download them. I just get a file and a security log. I dont know what to do.

But seriously Did you get hit bya storm?

Cause I have seena bad modem fry up copper pretty bad so it cant be used, assuming that you had nothing in the USB at the time, it wouldnt mess the USB.

hope you find something out.

I have some things under "other devices" that may be a cause to this problem:

1. Other PCI Dridge Device
2. PCI Mem Controller
3. SM Bus Controller
4. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

What should I do with these. I am running an MSI Neo4 Platinum.

I've had the same problem with my laptop Intel 100 V Pro NIC. First you need to make sure the CAT 5 cable is inserted tight all the way in. Second, go to DM and then uninstall the NIC (Intel 100 V Pro). Then have it detected again. After detection and it still does not work, re-start the system. Goodluck.

For the Intel, run diagnostics from its property tabs in DM (assuming current PROSet package as they were in the CP once upon a time).

It is often best to get drivers from the manufacturer of the component device rather than of the mobo.
