Is it possible to get Cable TV with some application or something just by having ur computer plugged into your cable modem? (No TV tuner card)

many cable providers don't block the TV frequencies when you get a standard cable modem - put a splitter upstream of the modem (just one splitter, mind you) and plug it into your TV.

if you get a signal, they didn't block basic cable. Mediacom (in Iowa) blocks, but TWC (KCMO) doesn't, AFAIK.

good luck.

any one in the hous assuming they're connected. There really isn't anything stopping you. But it's illegal, so this is all theoretical, of course

If they turned it on, it's not illegal. I had internet service only at my last place (directv for television) and I couldn't tune anything with my card.

Cox has this stupid math that makes it cheaper to have basic cable and internet ($52) than just internet alone ($55).

I have Cox and at least in Tucson, internet by itself is the cheapest ($49.95 vs. $55+tax for internet+basic). A while ago Cox offered its existing internet only customers basic for free (actually there's $1.37 in tax added).

You can call them and ask if they are still offering the "free" basic cable.

when i was at college at Rutgers, cablevision didn't block off the cable signal, and we ended using that for video for the first month, well until we had cablevision come in and install digital cable.

You might be better off to keep the cable modem on an isolated cable line. I dont know if close proximity to a cable modem hurts the signal or not. It is best to run a line from the Cable Splitting Block or by adding an extra cable splitter block if it is too far to hook it up. You can only split the cable so many times before you get a degraded signal.

I have Time Warner cable here in upstate NY. I pay for high speed internet and recently I split the line and ran it to the TV tuner in my PC just for shitz and giggles and I got interesting results. With my TV Tuner set on "Cable" (not antenna) I get a spattering of cable channels. I get ITV on channel 109, ShopNBC on 80, Spike TV on 78, E! on channel 77 and I can barely make out the channel guide on 2. All the rest of the channels are solid black and white static and I get the same results plugging the cable into a regular TV. Even if just basic cable does anyone know how I can get the rest of the channels for free? It kinda seems like with the high speed internet I pay for coming into my apartment that there sending the TV signal in with it but with 99% of the channels being static maybe not..

This is overly simplified but you can get the main drift.
Basically each tv channel over cable uses a different frequency. The cable company can put filters in the line, at your house or on the pole to block any individual channel or all of them. If you're lucky they will not block out the tv. Friends of mine have had it both ways, some even slipped cash to the installer to forget about the filters. To test your cable just disconnect it from the cable modem and hook it up to a tv. If you get channels, then just put a splitter anywhere ahead of the cable modem and tv(s). It is illegal to steal cable. Comcast charges you less per month for internet if you have cable tv. Local channel only cable tv qualifies you and it is only around $10.00/month.
If you want to watch tv on your moniter, then you need some sort of tuner card. I use a AIW radeon and split the main cable. part to the cable modem and part to the AIW. It works great for recording like a tivo.

Comcast has started blocking the TV signal if you don't pay for it.

i have twc and they charge a whopping 50 dollars for basic cable +100 regular cable channels. basic cable sucks btw, they only give you select channels from 1-100, but there isn't anything good on those channels. They also have a package deal where they provide you with regular cable and rr internet for 99 bucks a month. Crazy when im getting dsl for only 35 bucks a month.

Try the different cable standards in the ATI TV program (HRC is one of them IIRC).

With my ISP (comcast in the philly area), I HAVE to have basic cable if I want cable internet - so even though I have directv (i wasn't happy with comcast digital cable), I still pay for basic cable, even though the line coming out of the ground now goes through the house right into the modem...so it's not being used at all for basic cable. Kinda sucks but Im happy with the cable internet, so I guess its worth it - since Verizon DSL sucks around here.
