Cable was nice for me over a year ago. But then my Cable company went on several huge promotional pushes, and ended up overloading my area node. For about three months before I was forced to switch ISP's (It was gettin worse from about 5 months before the switch), I was only able to download at about 20k/sec. Where as 6-7 months before, I could download at 100-120k/sec easy. I told them the speed of my new DSL when I was talking to tech support (Its 12-14k/sec) and they said thats much slower then what I should be able to get with my cable. Not true. I was only able to send at about 5-6k/sec with my cable. On any gaming server around the net I was gettin around 65-75% packet loss. Fun stuff! And the second ping on any traceRT (My ISP's server/router, not sure what it is) I was pinging around 120-150.. Kinda high. Normally, with cable or DSL, your ping should be like 10-20...
Now that I've switched to DSL, I can download at 150k/sec at anytime of the day. I get about 1-2% Packet loss on any gaming server..(If I do get any PL, its somewhere between my ISP's backbone, and the server itself) And my DSL has only been down for about 2hours since I got it about 8 months ago. Pretty good!
But it seems there is alot of bad DSL in the U.S. I have had a really great expirience with my DSL here in Canada. All I can say is, if you can find a good ISP, then go for it! I for one, will never go back to cable if I can find DSL like this.
