I agree that pccables.comis the best place to buy cables. I have used them in the past.
The Netgear USB to Ethernet adaptors for $6 at the site Talon mentions is a good deal. I use one of these whenever someone brings me their computer for me to work on with no NIC . Plug and play in XP. Comes with a floppy for older OSs. I think I will trow a few items in my basket and see how their shipping looks.

Whenever I work on a friend's computer at my house I just install (and give) them an ethernet card if they don't have one. That way I won't be working on their machine again when they decide to put in a broadband connection . . .

Remember those Belkin $.81 (yes, 81 cents) ethernet cards from Dell last year? I still have a half dozen on my basement workbench!

So these Netgear USB to Ethernet adapters work OK? I normally wouldn't be interested, but I'm totally maxed out for PCI slots. I've got a $429 2.4 GHz Dell 4500 from a deal last September (great box, great deal), but it has only 4 PCI slots, and non on-board ethernet. It's times like this I wish for legacy slots... I've got:
- a NIC;
- a SCSI card - for my Plextor 40x CD player, the ulimate CD ripping machine;
- a Firewire card, for downloading video from my digital camcorder for editing; and
- a decent sound card from another AT deal.

Now I want to add RAID, and something has to go... If these USB<->Ethernet adapters work well, I won't have to go back to on-board sound...

You won't get awesome performance out of it. Remember that USB 1.1 is limited to 12Mbit, so those USB<->Ethernet adapters advertising 10/100 connectivity will probably provide closer to 5-6Mbit after taking into account USB, Ethernet, and TCP/IP overhead. If you've got a cablemodem and that's it, you'll be peachy.

You could combine the Firewire/Sound Card by buying an Audigy, it has one firewire port on the back.

Thanks for the info. I went to a lan party this weekend and needed a 7 ft Cat5e cable and a 10/100 ethernet pci card. Best Buy had the Linksys card for $4.99 after rebate, then came the cat5e. They wanted $14.99 + tax for a 7ft cable. Luckilly I didn't open the package because someone had a spare and I'm returning that puppy. The same cable at cablesnmor is only $3.50 and at pccables is $2.99.

You could also get a USB-2, firewire card if your computer doesnt have usb 2.0, and get a usb 2.0 ethernet adaptor.

I have a sound blaster 16 card that has built on SCSI!! I could send you that if you want it!!! Got to love (not) compaq.

Actually, if I remember those early SB cards correctly (back in the O~L~D days...), it wasn't standard SCSI, but some sort of proprietary alternative... The CD drives (1X) that came in the SB kits wouldn't work with any other card.

I had a 2x!!!! lmao! But on the card it said scsi, and the drive did work with another card I had (tekram scsi card). I also remember the cardsa that had a IDE controller on them. I miss them!

Good point about avoiding USB 1.x for NIC replacements. Has anyone had any experience with this USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter, from TRENDnet? $26 shipped seems like a good deal... (Cheaper than a new Audigy sound/firewire card )

When upgrading the old computers, ran across a couple of sound cards with 2 or 3 drive interface ports... 1 was IDE, the rest were proprietary. I have seen the SB16's with SCSI built onto them. For some reason I just never trusted Creative to make a good SCSI card.
