Cablevision Sucks!

So I have been using a SD Tivo for the past 3 years with no problems. A couple days ago a bunch of channels go off line and I get a message saying a cable box or cable card is needed to view the channel.

I then decide that its time to go and get the HD Tivo as I can use Cablevision's cable cards in the unit. I head over to the cablevision store and they won't give me the cards. I am required to set up an appointment with a technician to come out to my house. That fee is $34.95 PLUS I have to "rent" the cards at a cost of $5.50/m. So now I got to pay $5.50 plus the tivo monthly fee on top of the $250 that I had to shell out for the box.

F that, F them....I'm returning the tivo and I just deal with not having discovery, history, spike, AMC, sci-fi, etc.

For that price I can just get another HD DVR from cablevision for $9.99/m....but F them.

I agree with you. Honestly if it wasn't for my wife I would get rid of it. I can watch my shows online or find other ways.

If Cablevision's HD DVR wasn't such a huge pile of crap I would get it.

Time Warner is the same. They want let you install the cable cards, and in some areas you have to wait and get a tuning adapter so you get all the channels on your Tivo.

I would if it wasn't for the wife. She likes to watch tv when she cooks, cleans and does her work.

cablevision store? Is that the same as the walk-in center where people trade in or hand in their boxes? They always suggest to me to go there instead of calling in a tech (same cost as you mention). I've traded to an HD box there, handed them in when I quit them... no fees, simple and quick.

Straight-up asking for a card without their box can be why you're seeing this fee though.

I'm in the same boat. Cablevision recently took away channels that I had for over a decade for no reason other than to try to get me to spend more money renting boxes from them. That's a douche move.

Fios here I come. Even if it's a little more expensive.

edited for spelling failure.

just keep calling and complaining about the pointless fee. I set up my HD Tivo myself, then moved and had to have a "technician" set it up again. Worthless.

Also, the (1st) CableCard should be free as I think its a law, so I'd look into that.

Yep, thats what I am talking about. I've been to the store/center a couple of times to exchange boxes or whatever. I went there today expecting them to hand over some cards but the lady said they can't do that there and I would have to schedule an appointment.

I really wish Fios would be available in my area. My dad works for verizon so I would be able to get a discount on the services. Its a bunch of crap that CV just decides to move those channels from analog to digital and people who don't use cable boxes are hosed. (even though we are still paying for them)

The TV in my living room has cablevision's HD DVR connected to it and I can get the channels but the tivo in the bedroom does not since there is no box hence the reason for getting the HD Tivo w/ the cable cards.

However, just spending $250 on the box plus another $40 installation plus another $5/m to rent the cards and its just ridiculous. I hate that CV DVR....its like it was programmed by a blind retarded 3rd grader.

When Cablevision did that to my parents, it prompted them to switch to Verizon FiOS. They couldn't be happier with their service.

the DVR from Comcast is pretty good (the remote sucks though, can't use it at all), but Comcast's HD service is absolutely terrible.

I don't understand why Tivo cant sell their software to these major cable companies. Last time I checked Tivo was selling their units at a loss with the hope of people buying the equipment and cashing in on the monthly service. If Tivo could dump the hardware on to someone else and lease their software I would think that would be more profitable. Or maybe they have and the cable companies don't want anything to do with them.....who knows, its a monopoly right now and it sucks.

Edit: I returned the HD Tivo back to best buy. Told em cablevision's pricing did not make the unit viable.

Comcast has DVRs that use Tivo's software.

Really, thats cool. Do they work as well as the units sold directly from Tivo? I knew that DirecTV was using Tivo but thought that they had been fazed out.

Dish FTW. I threw comcast and there crummy HD/DVR to the curb when I moved.

Through the phone company, I'm getting internet, dish, and phone for $95 a month. Plus they gave me a free iPod touch for signing up.

What did comcast give me? A headache.

I hate satellite TV. The last two places that I have worked both had satellite and every time the weather was bad we lost the signal. Try working a double shift with 2 feet of snow outside with nothing on TV to watch - it sucked. From that moment I swore I would never get satellite TV.

I want to love satellite especially with DirecTV having the sunday ticket package but I can't.
