So I'm entertaining some job offers and am trying to calculate my end result pay check. I found a site that has a calculator and want to make sure I'm using it properly.

http://www.paycheckcity.com/calculator/

The top part I can fill out just fine. However, the deductions at the bottom is what I need to make sure I'm doing right.

The main things coming out of my check (other than taxes) are health insurance and 401k.

When I fill out the deduction for 401k, I'd just put in the percentage but then do I check the boxes to show it's exempt from the taxes? I'm assuming that since 401k and insurance come out pre-tax, that'd be the same as saying they are exempt from taxes.

Some for health insurance. I'd put in the weekly portion I have to pay, check the boxes, and I should be good to go right?

I just don't want to calculate this out and then find out I screwed it up...

Actually just found a tutorial that confirms I was doing it mostly right.
Looks like I check state and federal but not the fica and local... hmmm

Thanks.

401k is exempt from everything except FICA, I believe. Health insurance should be exempt from everything.

I just tested mine and it's accurate to within a dollar, FWIW.

It depends on the state, but Sec125 plans are definitely exempt from Fed and FICA. State and local depends. For Pennsylvania, cafeteria plans are exempt from state and local taxes. 401(k) plans on the other hand are only exempt from Federal taxes in PA. They are exempt from state tax in NJ, but cafeteria plans aren't. The joys of keeping up with payroll laws...

Compared to Texas, you'd get only $73,491.34.

Calculations Based On:
Check Date 04/17/2012
Gross Pay $100,000.00
Gross Salary YTD $0.00
Pay Frequency Bi-weekly
Federal Filing Status Single
# of Federal Allowances 0
Additional Federal Withholding $0.00
State for withholding Texas

Well, I'm in WI so it's not quite that bad I don't think. But I'm not making that much anyway.

Uh yeah, I'd happily pay over $10k a year to not live in Texas, I can't wait to leave this turd infested region.
Haven't you ever been to California?

I've been to LA, it was horrible. SD was cool. I grew up in Dallas (loved it), lived in Austin (loved it), live in Boston now (love it).

As fun as SD was, in no way shape or form would I want to live in CA AND make $10k less. I'll take Texas all day and live like a king.
