If you are calculating the exact amount to the penny, I can see it being a bit of a challenge. But why would anybody do that?
Estimating 10% and 20% shouldn't be hard for most people. Then pick a number in between the two, depending on how the service was.
Bill is $78.50
round to $80
ANYONE should be able to tell you that 10% of $80 is $8 and 20% is $16, so tip between $8 and $16.
My 8 year old can easily figure that out.

Calculating tip is extremely difficult. I struggle with this all the time. I envy the few that can do this well

I wouldn't be so sure. I bet if you were to go ask random people what 10% of $80 was, more wouldn't know than would.

People, on average, are really, really stupid.

Shift decimal point to the left 1 (10%), multiply by 2 (20%). There's the tip. I'll usually round up.

Bill is $28.72.

2.87 * 2 = ~5.50. I'd pay $34/35, depending on whether or not I had singles.

Here's how i do 15%:

For example, a $23 bill

Take 10%, which is 2.3

Divide 2.3 by 2 which gives you 1.15

Add 1.15+2.3 = 3.45

I'd make it 3.5 so it doesn't look too obvious that i calculated the tip exactly 15%

Easy enough in one's head IMO.

yeap. but then i round up or down. IF the bill is $28.35 i round it to 28 )easy math). and do what you liste.d then i round the tip. im not going to leave the waitress change. so i round it down to $4

15% is 10% plus half of it again...

For $27.68 round up to $28, so 15% is $2.8 +$1.4 = $4.20 easy...

(Granted that without the rounding it is $4.15, but if an extra 5c tip is going to break the bank you have bigger problems)

I struggle too. I can never decide whether to give 5% or 10% tip.

That's exactly what I do.

Calculating any percentage is easy to do in your head. If I have a minute in line at a store, I calculate the tax before I get to the register, and give exact change if I have it. It's amazing how many cashiers think I'm some kind of reincarnated Einstein by doing basic math :^/

Usually tip + tax is around 25%, so I just divide the subtotal by four and add that to the subtotal. If I'm in a group, I can't just double the tip.

I usually give 15%, so I round the bill to the nearest dollar, take 10% (if you can't do this I don't know how you are smart enough to make enough money to eat out), divide that by 2, add the results, and round up or down to the nearest dollar.

$105.77 --> $106 bill = 10.60 + 5.30 = $15.90 = $16 tip.

Well it's really easy to calculate 10%, just move the decimal over. So just that plus half of itself is 15%.

EDIT: should have read the thread before I posted this was already said.

This.

Which (since I'm dating a server) is usually 20% provided they didn't give bad service. It's total*.1 (which I just move the decimal to the left one spot) * 2 then round to the nearest dollar amount (generally).

27.68= 2.76*2=$5.52+27.68=$33.20 which I'll round to $33 most likely. If I have a really good server I might round to $35 (or she's hot ).
