I'm a bit weak at statistics, but I'm trying here. Perhaps some of you could help me with something. And maybe we can get a good stats based fantasy football discussion going.

What I'm trying to do is calculate which stat categories (passing yards, touchdowns, receptions, targets etc..) are more variable year to year. The process seems simple enough. Using Pro Football Reference I compile data from the past x amount of years on a bunch of different players. For instance, I take a look at Peyton Mannings career stats. I normalize the stats for that year to reflect a full 16 game season (to account for injuries and other missed games) and then I calculate averages, standard deviations etc. for each of his statistical categories. The problem is... the numbers don't really reflect which category is more or less variable. His standard deviations for completions if 42 but his SD for touchdowns is 8.5

How can I compare these two each other on a more normalized scale? I'm sure there is a way, I'm just not well versed enough to figure it out.

Honestly if I was doing this I think I would just look at total points scored per season rather than each category.

The reason I don't want to do that is because points are skewed by categories that are not consistent from year to year. A running back may score 250 points in a year, with 12 rushing touchdowns (72 points). Whereas, the next year he might only have 4 rushing touchdowns with the same amount of yards/carries. A decrease in 48 points or a decrease of nearly 20% in production.
