im curious how is farming only 2% of CAs economy? doesn't it produce like most of our food?

Holy shit

California compared to other countries GDP is in the same range as Canada and Italy (corresponding with the Department of Finance figures in 2005)
The economy of California is the largest in the United States. As of 2013, California's gross state product (GSP) is about $2.050 trillion.[1] The state's GSP grew 2.0% in 2013.[1]

im aware of this. but based on the amount of food that comes out of the state I would have said Agriculture was higher than 2% of GDP

And if you're going to sit there saying "It's all the consumer's fault, they need to conserve more water! Not the farms/agriculture accounting for 70%" you would think it would be a bigger contributing factor to the economy for important things like water that could drive MUCH more business and MANY more consumers out of the state.

Stupidity at its finest.

Not sure what is so surprising.

It's 3rd largest state and bigger than most countries on this planet.

I do find it surprising that ag represents only 2% of CA GDP, considering how much square footage it requires. ....seems very wasteful, but there is some awesome food coming out of the state, so I'm torn.

what does "Government" mean, in that chart, and why is it 12% of GDP?

:hmm:

according to the wiki...

Government is California's largest industry, like most states, with about 2.5 million employees. The second largest industry, according to the Census, is Healthcare and Social Assistance.[20]

California is the most populous state which is the more important fact for economics. One of every eight Americans lives in California. Imagine what will happen if they start moving to other states.

Gov. Jerry Brown is talking tough about cutting back water use, but he's making one thing clear: He is not going to tell farmers what they can or cannot grow.

"I believe farmers should grow whatever they want," he told me and a dinner companion at venerable Frank Fat's restaurant near the Capitol about two weeks ago.

seriously Brown what the fuck.

Almonds are especially thirsty in the southern San Joaquin. But there's a lucrative overseas market for them so growers have been planting more and more trees. Basically, one almond requires a gallon of water to produce.

WTF?!?!?!?! CAPS.

I could understand forcing Californians to defecate outside and recycle sweat for an awesome nut, like a pistachio. But not almonds, they're terrible.

"But think of the farmers" is basically "think of the children" translated from social to economic issues. It's an obvious bullshit appeal to emotion, and it works far more often than it fails. There will have to be severe water shortages for citizens before agriculture's water use is limited in any real way.

Large parts of the state will be able to buy their way out of the problem with waste-water recycling, increased efficiency, and probably some limited desal. It's gonna cost some extra money but the major coastal areas will likely never run out of drinking supply. Untapped, treated, groundwater would easily cover any gap years if supplies fell too low. Unlike the ag areas the tables haven't been depleted.

The ag users and inland towns will be totally fucked though at the current rate unless they change with the times more aggressively.

Actually even in the non ag areas the ground water definitely has been depleted. Most of AG has been running all the ground water supplies dry and a lot of the tie together. Nobody has mapped out the bodies of water underground for who know what reason so nobody seems to really know much of anything.

A bunch of sun, year round growing, a bunch of migrant labor... Farming a desert is easy if you can get a bunch of govt-supplied water.
Farming a desert is probably easier than places that get rain. More sun and less fungus (disease) to worry about.

There used to be a bunch of tree nuts grown in upper New York, but those farms couldn't compete with California.

Pretty sure the peninsula and some east bay cities are drawing groundwater on that basis these days. I know SF intends to source 5-10% of daily water needs from local wells in the next couple years to lessen dependance on Hetch Hetchy.

It's not a long term solution but a reasonable stop gap in the interim to investing billions in waste water reclamation, which is increasingly being discussed.
