I have conducted a number of experiments that demonstrate that when you poke people who have egos attached to moral beliefs that divide things into good and evil, by suggesting they are the ones who are bad, they lash out and strike back. Age doesn't seem to be a factor. But if one is capable of this kind of reaction oneself, how will we condemn it in others. The first requirement, it seems to me would be to address the reality of this fact. I read this somewhere long ago in a book intended to teach wisdom:
Who shouldn't criticize? You. Now the question I have is how do you act in a world where that's all the people do.
Your answer, it would appear to me, is to try to provide a corrective humiliation to induce some increased humility. I hope it works. Hicks are people too.
