Several people mentioned high cost of living. I think you guys really mean high cost of housing. I live in southern cali and yes, a shack here does go for a good half a mil. Less populated areas like central cali isn't that bad yet.

When you consider California is almost as large as the Eastern Seaboard you will realize that it can be almost as diverse. People Living in the Northern part of California are different than those living in the Bay Area who are different than those who live in Central California. Nobdy is like those living in the LA area.

Personally I like Central California and the Northern part. I used to really like the Bay Area but too many out of staters moved there during the Tech Boom which resulted in a down grade of the quality of life due to housing shortages (high rent) and over crowding much like LA. I'd say prior to 1996 it probably was the best place in the Continental US. Know it kind of sucks.

Besides the San Diego Area SoCal sucks IMO and I was born there (Inglewood).

Arrogantly clueless to the fact that they are the world's largest collection of "chumps," easy marks for almost every conceivable political and economic scam. It's amazing. The dryness causes forest fires and vegetation on slopes to die, so on the rare occasions it rains, besides every driver in Southern California immediately forgetting how to drive, mudslides occur.

I grew up in San Diego and I loved it however thye current political climate and the influx of people adn the outflux of good "middlewage" jobs has me glad I left.

I was outraged at the Power shortage (I got totally fvcked on that) and the solutions to fix it.

I moved to MN 4 years ago and I have not looked back. I love it here. However I see the same political problems here as well.

I had a german friend who's lived in many places around the world. After living in California (several places) for about 4 years, she described it as a perfect example of the lowest common denominator.

For my own experience, I used to think all the California hating was just the usual stereotype stuff hanging on for no good reason.
Having been stationed here for two years I can honestly say its deserved. A ridiculous amount of people here seem to be fools in the truest sense of the word. They have no real concept of their place in the world. They drift through life with slightly less than a clue, only peeking out long enough to criticize others and stoke their egos.
Then they turn inwards and complain constantly about mundane problems while the serious issues go unresolved. Its way too easy to live here. You dont have to worry about anything important and its not healthy. You need a little misery in life to be healthy. It builds character and makes one stronger for future obstacles. Provided it doesnt kill you.
Yes we would all like to live in a perfect world with no troubles. But it isnt gonna happen. Not in our lifetimes. California was pretty close to Utopia back in the 40's 50's and 60's. But it was inevitable that such a dream had to get ruined. Mostly by folks who were not strong enough to keep it running.

Great scholars have written about such a society for thousands of years, and it looks like California has finally come along to fit the bill.
But just like any other society, I recommend you come here and live a little while BEFORE you judge it.
