That's EXACTLY it. Like this: Southern CA is the place where the sky is black with smog but there's no smoking in bars (for "health reasons"). Where the people brag about how much money they make but have to work 3 jobs to just get by. Where the freeways are 20 lanes wide but you could get there faster by walking.Originally posted by: shortylickens

I dont think it could be said any better.
I made a similar point in a thread about one year ago. I will search to see if I can find it and repost. I was in rare form that day.
EDIT: Here it is.
I had a german friend who's lived in many places around the world. After living in California (several places) for about 4 years, she described it as a perfect example of the lowest common denominator.
For my own experience, I used to think all the California hating was just the usual stereotype stuff hanging on for no good reason.
Having been stationed here for two years I can honestly say its deserved. A ridiculous amount of people here seem to be fools in the truest sense of the word. They have no real concept of their place in the world. They drift through life with slightly less than a clue, only peeking out long enough to criticize others and stoke their egos.
Then they turn inwards and complain constantly about mundane problems while the serious issues go unresolved. Its way too easy to live here. You dont have to worry about anything important and its not healthy. You need a little misery in life to be healthy. It builds character and makes one stronger for future obstacles. Provided it doesnt kill you.
Yes we would all like to live in a perfect world with no troubles. But it isnt gonna happen. Not in our lifetimes. California was pretty close to Utopia back in the 40's 50's and 60's. But it was inevitable that such a dream had to get ruined. Mostly by folks who were not strong enough to keep it running.
Great scholars have written about such a society for thousands of years, and it looks like California has finally come along to fit the bill.
But just like any other society, I recommend you come here and live a little while BEFORE you judge it.

I don't think its too unreasonable.. considering they are the fifth largest single economy in the world.. and now over 35million people living there..
I can't wait to go back, thats for sure.

- Oakland, Richmond, Hayward, Palo Alto (West), LA, Redding, SF( to a certain extent).
- Very poor freeway and road planning (minus LA, which is actually quite good...traffic is bad, but considering the population they've done a good job).
lets see, I'll think of more... oh wait, state welfare they hand it out like candy.

By all means, stay right there. We sure as hell don't want you moving up here. The only reason Oregonians bitch about Californians is because they move up here and then try their arrogant damnedest to try to turn Oregon into California. No thank you.Originally posted by: zoiks
Too bad for you and her. I happen to love Cali and I'm sticking right here. I had a chance to go to TX after my company moved my job there. I refused to go and got multiple job offers a couple of weeks later.
BTW, by your bitter post I could already tell you were from Oregon since all they do is bitch about Cal.
Exactly. I love California. Except for the fact that Californians live there.Originally posted by: jjsole
California is a good example of when ignorance and arrogance wrecklessly collide.
It's often considered the most beautiful state in the country, which because of because of geography and climate, I personally think it is. But californians like to accept that status as meaning they are the most beautiful people in the country.
Overall, I think California is the best state in the country, with the only downside being that its inhabited.

Well being from Chicago you should know about Cesspools. I've been there and it's not so fscking great, especially when you compare it with civilized places like San Francisco and Boston.Originally posted by: jjsole
