EDIT: Here it is.

I had a german friend who's lived in many places around the world. After living in California (several places) for about 4 years, she described it as a perfect example of the lowest common denominator.

For my own experience, I used to think all the California hating was just the usual stereotype stuff hanging on for no good reason.
Having been stationed here for two years I can honestly say its deserved. A ridiculous amount of people here seem to be fools in the truest sense of the word. They have no real concept of their place in the world. They drift through life with slightly less than a clue, only peeking out long enough to criticize others and stoke their egos.
Then they turn inwards and complain constantly about mundane problems while the serious issues go unresolved. Its way too easy to live here. You dont have to worry about anything important and its not healthy. You need a little misery in life to be healthy. It builds character and makes one stronger for future obstacles. Provided it doesnt kill you.
Yes we would all like to live in a perfect world with no troubles. But it isnt gonna happen. Not in our lifetimes. California was pretty close to Utopia back in the 40's 50's and 60's. But it was inevitable that such a dream had to get ruined. Mostly by folks who were not strong enough to keep it running.

Great scholars have written about such a society for thousands of years, and it looks like California has finally come along to fit the bill.
But just like any other society, I recommend you come here and live a little while BEFORE you judge it.
That's EXACTLY it. Like this: Southern CA is the place where the sky is black with smog but there's no smoking in bars (for "health reasons"). Where the people brag about how much money they make but have to work 3 jobs to just get by. Where the freeways are 20 lanes wide but you could get there faster by walking.
Edit: and where the women are "hawt" only by the grace of modern plastic surgery.

I don't think its too unreasonable.. considering they are the fifth largest single economy in the world.. and now over 35million people living there..

I can't wait to go back, thats for sure.

Here's one of the reasons I don't like it - because Californians heard this statistic and keep repeating it as if California exists in a vacuum separate from the rest of the U.S.

And because they brag about their inflated property values while at the same time complaining about how expensive it is to live there.

California is a good example of when ignorance and arrogance wrecklessly collide.

It's often considered the most beautiful state in the country, which because of because of geography and climate, I personally think it is. But californians like to accept that status as meaning they are the most beautiful people in the country.

Overall, I think California is the best state in the country, with the only downside being that its inhabited.

People in California are like a bowl of cereal (or granola bar). They're either fruits, flakes, or nuts. The cost of living sucks and California is one of the worst place to live if you're a man going through a divorce.

If I recall correctly, 2 in every 3 marriages end in a divorce in California.

In all fairness, that's not as bad as New York, where 2 in every 3 beatings end in marriage.

- disregard for life
- quasi humanists posing as vegetarians, PETA, the culturaly tolerant, and NFP groups
- excessive traffic in non-rural areas
- excessive pricing for housing
- unemployment benefits
- disability laws
- excess of "culture"...meaning: a lot of little "clicks" wherever you go...
- racism...Cali is the worst...why? because of the larger number of FOB's you get a nice mix of Indians who hate Blacks and Chinese....Chinese who hate Blacks, Whites, and Indians, Middle Easterners who hate Blacks, Chinese, and Indians...oh christ, there we go
- dichotomy in income...while great everywhere, is exceeingly high here.
- The prospect of raising children in: cities with high crime (you pay $$$ to keep away, just like anywhere, but it actually "costs" here", smog, lack of anything outdoors that isn't several hours away, and over legislation of laws pertaining to simple matters
- Oakland, Richmond, Hayward, Palo Alto (West), LA, Redding, SF( to a certain extent).
- Very poor freeway and road planning (minus LA, which is actually quite good...traffic is bad, but considering the population they've done a good job).

lets see, I'll think of more... oh wait, state welfare they hand it out like candy.

Californian's can't be faulted for not giving a sh!t, particularly because most are too ignorant to know other states exist.

I suspect the real reason that most people gripe about it so much is because it is no longer seen as the beacon to a better life the way it was for 140 years of US history. Personally I have enjoyed my visits there and ignore the politics since they are really none of my affair.

By all means, stay right there. We sure as hell don't want you moving up here. The only reason Oregonians bitch about Californians is because they move up here and then try their arrogant damnedest to try to turn Oregon into California. No thank you.

I love how all of you who have visited here think that it makes you an expert. If you visit a place with predispositions of course you're going to come off with that perception. Didn't they teach that in like 5th grade?

Funny though, many people are complaining about SoCal and not NorCal. Even if they say they're complaining about "all" of California, none of it applies to us here on top. I haven't been to SoCal enough to accurately say yes or no, but some of the nicest people I know live down there.

The cities I mentioned are $hitholes.

There are plenty more, but those came to mind. Oakland is ok until 5PM roles around...then watch out. Richmond is about to be declared a state of Emergency, Hayward produces a fine number teenage mothers and welfare babies, and Palo Alto? Have you been there? It's the perfect representation of California....East Palo Alto was #3 on the FBI crimelist at one point...you cross one little bridge and all of a sudden it's "bling bling"...multi million dolar homes...

I thought of something else, being the nasty, arrogant, evil, and ignorant Californian that I am...we hate anything that isn't part of norm. Seriosuly...you'd think being here you could pretty much be who you want...not so at all. The people who tried to be different, Hip Hoppers, Goths, Nerds, Honkey Homies, whatever...they tried so hard to be different but in reality they joined a culture that already existed...and even when the various "cultures" or "followings" formed, there were so many of them grouping and joining they really weren't different.

It's like when those stupid asian tatoos started appearing...everyone thought they were cool and different...so what did everyone do? they got one...even though they didn't mean anything.

Well being from Chicago you should know about Cesspools. I've been there and it's not so fscking great, especially when you compare it with civilized places like San Francisco and Boston.
