This was part of one of the promoted comments...

I ended up disabling voice mail because I was getting so many BS calls. My phone's default ring is "silence" (a recording of nothing) and anyone who goes into my contacts list gets a ringtone.

So, basically, if the phone rings, I know it's someone I know.

I use a program for blocking calls that aren't in my contact list, but thought the commenter's method was simple and elegant.

Get a google voice number and block away anyone you want, send them a nice notice....This number is no longer in service! Love it and so easy to do! It's worth the price of google voice alone, which is free!

most of my phones have built in options for do not disturb or quiet modes that make it very easy to only let contacts or favorites ring the phone as well as handling other calls in a better manner than just ignoring them.

Sometimes Grandma might call from a pay phone..

You're replying to a post by lxskllr and suggesting something related to Google. Are you insane?

In all seriousness, yes, a forwarder solution would be most elegant in this case. There are other VoIP providers that have similar features that aren't Google. So I agree with your suggestion.
