Call me crazy, but I just bought another HD-DVD.

Well since they fvcked the Blu-ray version up, I went ahead and purchased Pan's Labyrinth on HD-DVD, and at $35 no less. The BD US version has poor visuals but great audio. The BD UK version has great video, poor audio. WTF? So I just got the HD-DVD version which has fantastic visuals AND audio. I've been looking for this thing everywhere, but since WB announced the Red2Blu program, I think everyone have just been buying up the WB HD-DVD titles. Anyway, I paid more than I should have but I had to have it, and wanted the best version available.

For anyone interested, the BD version of the Matrix is fvcked up too and WB has yet to fix it. Coupled with the awful DNR that was used on the BD versions of Star Trek (with the exception of Star Trek II), it's crap like this that's going to really start to hurt Blu-ray.

Ummmm, good for you? I've already bought basically every HD DVD I'd ever be interested in owning. I can live without owning a copy of Cat People.

It's deja vu all over again, the first few years of DVD had more than its share of botched encoding jobs.

As the format takes hold and $49 blu players become common they'll keep re-releasing titles until they get them right.

That's one reason why I just rent from Netflix for now. That and it saves me $100+ a month ... to put into the stock market

I did the same, but hesitated on this one. I could have gotten it for <$20 way back when, but now I have to pay the price for waiting too long.

Well this is the problem, the ONLY thing that makes Blu-ray better than DVD is improved image and audio quality. Studios are screwing people over by releasing the same movie on Blu-ray but not putting in the effort to do it right. Take Young Guns for instance. AWFUL transfer! I don't think you'd be able to tell the difference between the Blu-ray and DVD version. And when people get it home and see no improvement, they'll ask themselves, "why the hell did I just spend this extra money for a movie I already have?" That is what's going to hurt the format. Studios out to try to make a quick buck on a Blu-ray release and not putting in the effort to do it right. And by doing it right I mean a FULL restoration, none of this excessive DNR junk.

Thanks for posting this, I just picked up one for $14 shipped (used) off amazon. The wife and I really enjoyed it and with my new home theater speakers, it should be great.

I wanted to completely move from HD-DVD to Blu-ray but apparently the studios are making this as difficult as possible for people that want the best quality for their movies. :| As it stands right now, I have ~50 HD-DVDs and coming close to 200 Blu-rays. By December I think I should have a pretty nice HD collection.

So what's the purpose of that? The HD-DVDs still work, and generally are the same visual quality as the blurays. The only way I'd get rid of mine is if I could switch ALL my movies for free so I could get rid of the player. Otherwise there's no point.

What's the purpose of updating my HD-DVD stuff to Blu-ray using the R2B program?

1. I have a really nice Blu-ray player and would rather use that player for my HD movies. I still have my HD-DVD player, but I'll just use it for the one off movies or until I move everything fully to Blu-ray. If they come out with a better version of Pan's Labyrinth on Blu-ray, I'll buy it, put all my HD-DVDs in a box and retire my HD-DVD player.
2. It was $5 to update to Blu-ray AND I also get to keep the HD-DVDs. Great deal IMO.
3. One step closer to consolidating to one format.

And no, I'm not getting rid on my HD-DVDs.

I wanted it new not used, and like I said, with the WB promotion it became almost impossible to find (besides eBay). I'm not really trying to expand my HD-DVD collection though, I just wanted this one movie.

I don't sell or throw away stuff like that. I'll just box them up and store them. It's like a little piece of history in a box.

I've never heard of HMV or Zellers. Are there any stores in the US?

I tried to fire up the A2 last night for some stupid action, and got some huge error message "This is not a DVD format"

"well, no shit sherlock! It's a fucking HD DVD! You're fucking HD DVD player, so play the fucking HD DVD?~!!!!111"

played DVDs fine. Would lock up, error, get past menu once, then lock up and error. lock up while loading. refuse to turn off manually....

WTF? I've moved twice since I last used the thing (almost a year, maybe), so perhaps there was damage?

*goes to search the internets for HD A-2 problems*

...and I keep telling myself I'm going to buy some 4 dolla HD DVDs. glad I've held back.

Don't forget:

4. very few HD DVDs take advantage of lossless and HD audio formats, for some stupid reason. so at the very least, the audio is *usually better on the BD version.

HMV is not in the US??? I am pretty sure they have US locations. Humm, apparently the last US store closed in 2004.

No Zellers either?

well, last time I did was right when i purchased it, the fire sale just before thanksgiving, just before they went Kaput.

That was my first thought, of course, I just haven't looked into it yet. Only thought about tackling this issue just now.

The odd thing is that all of my HD DVDs worked at one point. WTF would it suddenly not recognize them on the same firmware?

bah.
