Try Rapid Fire + Grip on the AK74u. I really liked that even after the nerfing. Reload time is a bit slow, but it gives you more close range damage without much long range sacrifice.
Although I've started branching out trying to get more pro perks. Working on Warlord now so I decided to give the AK74 with rapid fire & suppressor a try. Not sure if it's because it's been so long since I've used it or the rapid fire, but it seems to have a bit more upward recoil then I remember.
The recent patch added more recoil, slower reload times, and nerfed the damage of the AK74u. It is still really good, you just can't take down 4 people per magazine anymore.
Did you play TDM or an objective game?
Actually, it beat alot of AR's at medium-long range. I still don't think it was THAT bad, but it was certanly the best SMG.
you get the enfield at what level 4? its actually a very decent gun, the galil and famas are also pretty early however might be after 10
I did alright with the starter SMG class for quite awhile. I used the MP5k until I unlocked the AK74u (at 17). The FAMAS is 14 and the Galil is 28 IIRC. The Enfield isn't terrible, but it isn't amazing either. In CoD4, I could use the Assault starter class the entire prestige and the AK47 and P90 was decent as well.
MW2 I would use the FAMAS until I unlocked the ACR, then it was beast mode.
I don't find the game too terribly OP at higher levels. With exception of the Stahl launcher, and that is only due to ammo, nothing stands out as being vastly superior.

I never liked it. I won't use any SMG's. I don't care if most people use the AK74, most people die to my Galil. I do not believe the AK74 has ever been better than half the AR's available. I just assumed people used it because in MW2 an SMG was the best gun in the game and they have some idea that it is the same in BO. Part of the nerf should have been to put it at a much higher level to force everyone to use different guns, then maybe people won't use it so much.
Honestly one of my biggest beefs with Black Ops is that as a whole the starter weapons suck. Compare it to CoD 4/MW2 low level (pre-lvl 10) weapons, look at the list of "good" guns:

The MP5 kinda sucks, Enfield sucks, RPK/HK21 are nowhere near as good as the RPD was...there's just not alot to start with. On MW2 I'd happily use the UMP/M4/SCAR throughout the entire prestige.
Yep, that's my biggest complaint. In previous games, the early weapons were just as good as the later ones. In BO, it's clearly not the case. The weapons with few exceptions just get better and better as you progress. On top of that, it takes a really long time to unlock pro perks, which gives higher level players yet another advantage.
None of it is game breaking, you can still play at lower levels just fine, but a disadvantage is a disadvantage any way you slice it. I hope this isn't the way the games will be balanced from now.

You don't have to be "of a higher level" to unlock pro perks. I had SoH pro and Scavenger Pro before I got the Ak74u at 17. Maybe people with higher skill unlock them faster, but weapons don't matter at that point. I don't see any unbalances. The starting kits aren't terrible. The assault is fine, and the SMG one is pretty good as well. People who don't like the MP5K haven't used it much. I do almost just as good with it than I do with the AK74u.
