Call of Duty Ghosts Impressions

Yes. I play it now and again at a friend's house (he bought a couple pallets of PS4s and XB1s to resell, and ended up keeping a couple of XB1s after losing $$ on them). Even with 75mbit FIOS, the netcode is extremely mediocre.

COD fans should be happy though, as this release was CLEARLY a bridge too far in extending fossilized technology with a new paper-thin coat of paint and trying to pass it off as a competitive title. With a franchise THIS valuable, there's absolutely no question that the next release will be a true leap forward. The appearance of Titanfall to pretty much eat their lunch on 360/XB1 means that they can't afford another lazy uninspired rehash.

If I were a betting man, I'd put the odds at the next COD approaching COD4 levels of win at a pretty high level if they do it right. Ghosts was insultingly terrible, and the sales of it are an embarrassment to the franchise. Whatever follows can and should be epic.

Isn't 2014's CoD still on a 2 year dev cycle? Or this the first year that will see a CoD that had three years to cook?

In either case I don't see it being that much of a gamechanger. Just because a solid chunk of the work is already done on it by now.

I am pretty sure 2014 will be the last of the 2 year. They announced this change in cycle just recently, so unless they plan on skipping next year's installment, it will only have been 2.

Treyarch isn't even making this year's game. They've begun a 3 year cycle with 3 dev houses already. Sledgehammer is making this year's release, so I don't think this one will have the change that COD needs, but I could be wrong. I wish it wee Treyarch making this year's though. Would really like to play zombie next gen.

I poke a bit of fun at the massive hype around things, but honestly it seems like you can't stand any opinion that doesn't mirror your own. I don't say things that aren't objectively true, nor do I discount the fact that others may have very subjective opinions on things. Gaming is supposed to be fun, and that's how I discuss things as well. I've even said repeatedly that graphics alone don't mean all that much in the big picture. Something can be fun both great and flawed at the same time, it's not a crime to admit that. I have not, nor will I ever insult someone for disagreeing with my perspective, and my POV is irrelevant to anyone else's enjoyment of what they like, just as this entire forum is to that purpose. That's kind of been my takeaway, and not just with fbrdwhathisname. I mean, to a certain degree it's human nature to subconsciously reject opinions that differ than your own (as a form of ego protection), but isn't one of the marks of maturity recognizing that tendency and suppressing it a bit in order to make room for civilized discourse? Hell, speaking of the TF thread, I posted a TF article speculating to the media blackout on the 360 version, and you'd think I skinned a live baby seal. I didn't get accused of going off topic... no... I wasn't talking about the correct aspects of Titanfall :whiste:. I also made a comment about Ghost's unimpressive visuals on the One and purebeast (what a name) practically had kittens.

TBH, I think it boils down to what I call Two-Year-Old syndrome: two year olds flip out because they're at that age where (most) people start coming to terms with the fact that not everyone sees and experiences the world the same way they do. This causes them to spring a leak. Looking around here, I sometimes wonder if we have a pack of experimental test tube babies that never went through that phase. If you're not 100% aboard the hype train or if you dare to look at anything with a critical eye, you're the devil incarnate.

I just got the game yesterday after Newegg put it on sale. It feels like other COD games and looks marginally better on the PS4 than the last gen (last one I bought was COD MW3 for the 360). I also have had BF4 on the PC for a while and much prefer that game over this one, if for no other reason than the number of players per game (32 or 64 player matches versus 8-12 player matches...no contest).

Activision needs to move this game to a new engine to bring this up to a true next-gen title. I see this game lasting about a week in my PS4 before inFAMOUS kicks it to the shelf.

The biggest problem with Ghosts, IMO, was just that it was too much more of the same. On its own, it wasn't a bad game by any stretch... but when you're releasing Call of Duty 26 1/2, it's going to need a little more than just a fresh coat of paint.

They did, however, destroy CTF

They do need a new engine. I don't think CoD really has much time left in its current position. There are going to be a lot of games that eclipse it entirely this next go around. Both in graphics on the consoles with the initial wow factor bringing in a lot of interest and more innovative gameplay. I think we are seeing the first of this with titanfall if it can sustain its momentum going forward. No it didn't break sales records but I believe it did break some record for the most players at one time or something similar. I believe Activision needs to reinvent the game for the new generation of consoles or eventually be left behind. I know ghosts is still selling but there have been some complaints about the game from long time cod players, if your loyal base leaves then you may have some thinking to do on your direction.

I've actually enjoyed the campaign more in ghosts than the mp.
