Without dedicated servers you'll have to rely on players to host games. Players don't have as much bandwidth as a dedicated server. The average upload speed of most people is probably only around 1-2mbps. This isn't sufficient for more than a few players at most.

There's also the issue of having to dedicate CPU time to playing the game and running the server, but that's probably less of an issue now than it was a few years ago since multicore CPUs are common.

The next part of this will be that map packs that were previously free on the PC will not cost the same $10 that console owners pay.

It'll be easy now, since they're taking away modding.

Game developers have tasted the sweet profit made by shoving DLC to captive audiences (Consoles). The future of PC gaming is that of corporate greed. Hell even SC2 my last bastion of hope is implementing a 'pay for player made maps, while we take a cut' system, and may or may not have a tiered b.net service. CoD4:2 was going to be an enjoyable game to pick up, I was even willing to look past the increase in price.. but more and more its seeming like the PC version was but an afterthought. I suppose we can't blame them though, they are only doing what the market will bear.

Talking about what the market will bear and going back to my point about IW/Activitsion getting their cut, would this almost you think that because of so called "piracy" that they think they can control said piracy that much more? Granted I don't think all 14k+ Dedis are running pirated copies or anything but do you guys think this could be a possibility?

We haven't even gotten into a discussion about what DRM is gonna be on this version. Maybe this is part of it? If you are truly looking out for your customer base and the legions of fans who have supported your releases thus far, how you, as a company, could consider this to be best for them as well as the consumer is just beyond me.

Oh and you think ATI/Nvidia are very happy with IW/ACtivision? If you are putting out a product that will pretty much have no discernible difference between playing it on a console or a 2-3k rig, that would seem to cut into ATI/Nvidia's profits a little bit. Especially NV ponying up the money to pay for the "free maps" from CoD4.

Nice. . .
I bet all of us can't wait to play on servers full of griefers and n-word spewing 12-year-olds, considering there won't be any server admins around to take ban requests and enforce server rules. Forget about friendly-fire servers too, it doesn't matter how high you set the penalty, kiddies will come in to TK for the fun of it. Forget about in-game voice-com with all the voice spam that will be on an unmoderated server. And good lord forget about any salvation once the first batch of hacks hits the web, because there will be no way to IP ban the inevitable wallhackers. You'll just have to hope that IW is going to use VAC and wait it out.

Sounds like fun to me.

This is awful.

I just signed the online petition.

Using VAC as an anti-cheat is awful as well. I can honestly say this will be the first game that I protest by not buying

So a few buddies of mine were going to buy this game, and take it to Afghan to play when we have some down time. And now I cant do this? Im confused about what I can, and cant do. Im used to be able to do whatever I want with a PC shooter.

I don't see why they'd remove the ability to play LAN games - but hey, Blizzard did it so I'm sure everyone will think they can do it now.

My thinking would be since this is distributed by the same company (Blizz/Activision) that maybe no LAN is part of the "dumbing down" of CoD.

Can anyone seriously play devil's advocate here and present a logical reason as to why this would be done? I mean seriously, I'm not coming up with any that just don't shaft us gamers/consumers.

The only reason I've heard of is to make it easier for people who are confused by servers (which is bullshit). This way they can just click "join game". I don't see why they can't have both.

Isn't that basically like the example I gave before for BF2 or even L4D where you can select quickmatch or some bullshit? We really need to hold that many people's hands? Talk about taking advantage of someone else's ignorance. :-\

What?

they aren't making players host their own games...they are hosting with their own servers. they obviously don't expect people to host 40+ person games for the fun of it with no control.

there are a few somewhat reasons why they might have done this. 1, it probably has an auto patch option, making it easier for people to update. 2, setting up the game to get online has been a pain in the ass in my experience, and I'm not your average dumbass computer user, although most people who game on PC aren't either. 3, way to test bnet 2.0, or at least some aspects of it. I'm sure there are more reasons. It won't stop me from buying it.

Speaking for the #1 ranked team on many of the Teamwarfare ladders. Asylum.

You just lost a combined $1080 in purchases. Ha

4. Since CoD:MW was very popular due to MP, they want to kill piracy as much as possible. Since A LOT of the buyers will play the game for MP, by forcing you to connect to IW servers they make sure those people need to run legit copies. Lesson learned from WoW I'm gonna buy the game for SP so I don't really care though

I never pirate, but of the players I know that do, the one type of game they don't pirate is that of the competitive league. (I.e. what this was)

I had high hopes for IW after they released the PC only Christmas map last year, and the free DLC. Recently I read a quote from them where they said that they "consider ourselves to be a primarily pc developer" or something like that. Yeah right. There are more games out there that I will buy instead of this. Maybe when the price comes down I will buy it for the SP.

Great. I built a damn pc for this game, and the only thing I cared about was MP. Canceled my pre-order, and if they release something acceptable I'll think about buying it.

Really sucks balls too, because I can't remember the last time I was so exited about a game.

Very disappointed to hear this. I love the custom maps and mods for COD:MW. I can't get enough Freeze Tag.
