Played about 30 minutes into the campaign. With all video settings maxed, I'm getting 30-45 fps. CPU utilization < 30% on 4 cores, and GPU utilization 40-50%. Is there something wrong with my rig or is the game just that poorly optimized?

rig: i7 860, hd 5850, 8 gigs of ram

Probably something is wrong, are you forcing any settings through catalyst center?

Not forcing anything from CCC and vsync is disabled in game. In BF3 I get 99% GPU usage and ~60% CPU. Using latest drivers as well.

Despite what everyone says about COD, I want to get the game. I play mainly single player and would like to see how the continuing story turns out. Hopefully it wont be as nonsensical at MW 2, but I am not counting on it. I thought COD4 had both a good story and gameplay.

Since I just pre-ordered skyrim though, cant see paying full price for MW3, I will wait a while for reviews and to see if it has performance problems like Blops did at the beginning. Maybe my friend will just get it or even rent it for the x-box.

People keep trashing the engine, but what amazes me is that COD 4 ran well on low end systems, even on a single core CPU. But now the system requirements keep increasing but I cant really tell any difference in the graphics. Matter of fact, I thought Blops had worse graphics than COD4, or maybe it was just a different style (all brownish grey and dull).

COD is COD. In the end I expect more of the same with a bit of tweaks and refinement. TBH that's fine with me. There are 2 main reasons though why I'm not getting this day 1.

1) Technical problems - I was horribly burned by the technical issues that plagued BLOPS. I picked up that day 1 after buying into all the hype and wasn't able to properly play it for months until they finally released a decent patch. I want to play MW3, but I will wait for the kinks to be worked out.

2) I just bought BF3 - Right now I am spending tons of time playing BF3 multiplayer, so I have no need for another military shooter. Maybe 6-9 months from now I will be more interested, especially if the price drops to $30-$40.

Since this is Activision we're talking about, I'm pretty sure this game will still be sold for $60 a year from now.

It's fine, Modern Warfare 3 will definitely drop down to $19.99...

...in 2017.

(If we're lucky, Steam will have it on sale a year from now for a whopping 33% off)

You are probably right, but I am hoping to catch some Black Friday or Christmas sale and get at least 10 or 20 bucks off, or maybe a gift card with purchase or something. If the reviews are bad or there are technical problems like Blops, will wait a long time, the price has to come down eventually.

Like dpod, I could never get Blops to play without the stuttering. And the initial patches did basically nothing to improve the performance. I dont know if the later patches helped. I managed to finish the single player and put the game away and havent looked back. Wish I had just rented it for my friends xbox.

it ran well on LOW end systems as it was DESIGNED ON A 7 YEAR OLD CONSOLE.

We don't want runs well on a POS.. we want an engine that pushes limits and pushes hardware and technology..

its old its tired and it's a been there done that type thing.. they are all the same..

The TF2 community has some absolutely unbearable people, which makes playing the game a horrible experience, in my opinion. Having to hear people complain incessantly during every match just kills the experience for me.

you can mute players

or just find a better server. When I was playing TF2 regularly, I found a great server. It was sometimes tough to get into, wait times up to 15+ minutes, but it was worth it. Both teams always played as a team, most players had mics and used them, if there was a balance issue between the teams it would get resolved by the players and not just random auto balancing, etc. It was definitely the best multiplayer gaming I've ever played.

I won't buy BF3 or MW3 until the first patch comes out for both of them. Hopefully, most of the major bugs will be worked out for them both by then for a more fair comparison.

Wow - no rank ups on dedicated servers only P2P. Everything is unlocked (depending on the server settings) for dedicated though. I guess that is aight - but it defeats the purpose of achievement. P2p is shite.

Haven't bought it yet, waiting for reviews, etc, but i've seen videos and it looks good enough to me. For me it's the gameplay, the guns, the story that I like. I don't want that to change.

Everyone on this forum always says gameplay is better than graphics but when it comes down to it, you're all just graphics whores.

After playing 3 hours of multiplayer my initial impressions are basically what I expected. This is MW2 with a new map pack and just some slight tweaks to a few things. Pretty underwhelmed but I knew what I was getting myself into when I blew my $60. This should be MW2.5.

I'll reserve final judgement after going through the single player campaign but it seems to be more of the same as before which is to be expected with this series. If you dont mind buying an average game that's a bit long in the tooth, go ahead and waste your money like me.

Just don't expect anything new or innovative with this one.

PS. Not being able to change the FOV is rather ridiculous and is making me a bit nauseous on my 28" LCD.

Off topic but, there was a day 1 patch for BF3, and there have been some server side fixes as well which have eliminated the dreaded "rubberbanding" issues.

Not sure I made my post clear, or you misunderstood, but I wasnt defending the engine as such. In fact it was meant more as a criticism of the engine in that the requirements keep going up, but the graphics havent improved much in my opinion.

However, I an not as interested in cutting edge graphics as you seem to be. I have a five year old system with a 9800GT and e4500 that is still good enough for me. I just wish they would come out with a FPS with a good single player storyline. Maybe MW3 will be decent, who knows.

This game is for the new kids who just started gaming. it's not for seasoned players with years gaming experience with cod. There will be many kids who get this for xmas and it will be their first war fps game. Me though, I've turned my cheek the other way and I'm still hunting for a game I can immerse myself in. but unfortunately I don't know what it will be.
