What are your VID's as shown from Core Temp (idle and 100% load)?

I just built 2 budget computers using e7400 cpu's. Core Temp list one with a VID of 1.1000 idle and 1.2625 at 100% load and the other CPU at 1.1000 idle and 1.2875 at 100% load. They are coupled with cheepo mobos that have no cpu voltage adjustments and I am shocked at the high voltage needed to run these chips.

In comparison, my e7200 M0 stepping has VID of 1.0625 idle and 1.0750 load. Considering this e7200 is running at 3.1ghz at stock voltage (cpu z shows 1.040v idle, 1.056v at load) it is hard to imagine the e7400 need so much juice to run at their stock 2.8ghz. Also the range from 1.1 to 1.2875 is HUGE. Whats going on with these R0 steppings? Just wondering if they are all like this or I got 2 bad ones.

That's about right with R0 stepping. I've never seen a 45nm chip with full load voltage under 1.1. 1.21 to 1.25 is the norm. Idle is 1.05-1.10V with EIST and C1E enabled. Activating C2E and C4E will further reduce idle voltage to 0.85-0.90V if supported by BIOS.

Overclockers can expect to gain 50MHz per 20mV increase in Vcore. My rule of thumb is to find the highest stable overclock speed at default load VID, then add another 300-400MHz of core speed with 1.36Vcore and other BIOS tweaks.

These R0 chips also don't have a working core temp at idle. The coretemp is stuck around 35C. There is no change until the cores get above 40C. I see the same thing under the latest Coretemp and Realtemp.

My E8400 (E0 stepping) has 1.1 idle VID and 1.25 load VID. It's stable up to 4.13GHz with default 1.25, and 4.44GHz with 1.37Vcore. Orthos voltage per CPUz is 1.32.

Really??!! So Intel bumped up the voltage significantly in these R0 cores? If I had know that, I'd stick to M0 cores in these two builds

Luvin my E7200 all that much more now! 1.056v under 100% load @ 3.1ghz (will boot at 3.2ghz but fails Orthos after 4hours).

Never tested M0 E7200. A chip that's stable @ 3.1GHz/1.06V would be equivalent to another that's stable @ 3.6GHz/1.26V. I use the 50MHz for each 20mV bump in Vcore rule. To confirm, raise your Vcore to 1.26 and retest @ 3.6GHz.

The current crop of E7400 is good up to about 3.3-3.5GHz @ 1.25VID. Essentially par with your old M0 CPU.

A good 45nm dual core should be able to break 4.0GHz with 1.25VID.

A lot of the earlier retail-boxed M0 E7200 had VID under 1.1v (6 out of 8 personally...the two exceptions were 1.1625v).
