That's kind of hard to tell. I think the model might be an older model. I guess I'd like to see a complete review of the specs before making a recommendation. Pioneer's gear is good gear. However, if the receiver is a 2-year-old model, it might not feature Dolby Pro Logic II which has been a very good feature that I like for 2-channel audio sources. In this regard, I would just recommend that you find something that has been released in the past year or so. That way, you'll ensure that your receiver has some of the latest features to carry you a few years into the future. Most options get released on the higher-level receivers first, and then float their way down the receivers the rest of us can afford. A receiver that was $750 two years ago should be selling for less than $400 today - when looking at the features alone.

If you have more information on the receiver, please post it. I am definately interested in seeing more on the '859' Pioneer receiver.

Hmm. Looking at this, they might be the same. Renamed?

Rob
Rob, That's what I was thinking. The receivers released in Europe, or other parts of the world, have a slightly different numbering schemes. From the list of specs, the receiver has THX certification - which tells me that the power should be "true" power and not over-inflated. However, if that's the case, the 859 was released back in 2000. It seems like it might be lacking the Pro Logic II features.

Here's another review

My first instinctive reaction points out that everyone's having a hard time finding a review, which shouldn't be difficult if it's a well-selling and well-performing receiver. That being said, Pioneer can make some decent stuff, even if it's not part of their Elite line (which this isn't)...i.e., their 711 budget performer.

I would say that for that price point, you have many other options, including and not limited to Onkyo, Denon, H/K...you might lose some of the top-of-the-line decoding capabilities, but I'm doubting that you'll really be needing them.

Hell, for $400 shipped I'll send you my 6-month old perfect condition, still under warranty Harman Kardon AVR-320. I'll even through in a set of custom made Canare component cables.

Best of luck, it's a fun thing, buying receivers. ^_^

Howard, you might want to edit your link, there's an "https://" in there, extra. And yeah, I was going to suggest Outlaw, but it didn't sound like he was too familiar with receivers, and I wouldn't want his first venture to be an online company that he can't test out...

But hey, Chilled&Refined, if you're up for it, definitely check them out

I beg to differ. Their Elite line is good, but Pioneer as a brand is pretty mediocre. It's all about discrete circuitry vs. integrated electronics.

I beg to differ, they are the OEM for lots other brands.
The weak point in audio systems are the speakers, especially the subs.
People waste time and money worrying about wires, and amplifiers, and CD players.

What a beast!

weight is a good thing
My Sony STR-DA4ES weighs in at 47 Lbs.
It's a bit heavy when it comes time to moving it around - or, to pull it out and connect some other components. However, yes, weight is quite important. Most of the weight goes towards to the power supply - which is essential in providing the amps with a steady stream of power as needed.
