OK, TeamAnandTech needs everyone's help. For those of you who don't know the team is currently in a race to complete the most Data Packets for UCBerkeley's SETI@Home project. If you have a computer that runs a server, a home network, or pretty much any computer just idling most of the day, RUN S@H as it affects members who call this board thier home.

Current stats from 12/05/01:

<<
Place/ Team/ Wus Behind/ Daily Production
12 M$...................................(+244147).................... +1758
13 Planetary........................(+233117)................... +1292
14 IBM..................................(+107630)................... +1534
15 TA.................1256026........................................ +7821
16 DSL.....................................(-86409).................. +5125

We are currently attempting to overtake IBM, yeah IBM!! So hop onboard and Join TeamAnandTech! Or just cruise on over to the Distributed Computing Forum

The best part is, you get some extra use for all the hardware you have bought.

Now you can play/work or whatever you use it for, and after/during the use, YOU can help Team AnandTech Seti

How long is SETI going to run? I have all the machines at my place running UD right now, I know it's time limited.... once it is up, I will definately join the AT seti team though

Seti will run until we find ET or he/she/it finds us, or we determine a better way of looking for him/her/it.

We'll leave the light on for you.

Well, SETI pretty much goes on indefinitely. Even if alien signals were discovered, who is to say that there are not more out there to find? Plus, SETI@Home also picks up signals from astronomical phenomena.

It may or may not be indefinite, but here are a few good reasons to join SETI or any other Distributed Computing project:

1) See just how much idle processor time goes wasted
2) See just hom much processor time/power there is in the world on a select few boxes
3) For you OC speed demons: See how many packets you can crunch in a day (WARNING VERY ADDICTING, CAN LEAD TO 'FLEETS' OF COMPUTERS)
4) Contribute what most consider worthless resources on what a few consider valuable
5) TO READ THE POSTS OF LARGER AND SUPPOSEDLY "FASTER" TEAMS REALIZING TEAM ANANDTECH IS SLOWLY OVERTAKING THEM
6) To see how your computer performs for long duration in both heat/stability at 100% load (don't have to waste all that precious cpu time running stability software)
7) To maybe, just maybe partake in research that could one day prove to be the most important discovery in the history of they human race
8) Why not? Got something better to do 100% of your processing power 100% of the time (any other DC projects count)
9) To show what an army of POS PC/Macs can do!
10) TO BEAT INTEL AND MICROSOFT (perhaps the sweetest of them all)

I've been crunching SETI since May, 1999
I started a group that went nowhere, then after amassing about 1700 work units I was unsatisfied being on a team that was doing nothing, I had been spending a lot of time here at AnandTech in the Hot Deals, ForSale and CPU/Overclocking forums and I noticed there was a team here. After talking with a few of the members I decided it would be fun to join up.
Now I have nearly 5000 work units, and they are all helping Team Anandtech move up the world wide ranking.

It was fun passing by Apple Computer, Hewlett-Packard, DSLR and Team Canada.

It will be great passing IBM, Planetary Society, Microsoft and Intel.
We need your help to pass these great teams - so come on and join up.

I still dont get whats the point of this. We dont get anything, we just waste our own time. Useless sh1t

"Yeah yeah we're helping find intelligent life". Uhm, grow up. Your not doing crap

Its true that there is no proof that we are being useful, but its FUN. and thats a fact. Let us enjoy ourselves

What are the requirements? Does it constantly run so you're basically dedicating a computer to it or does it run only when you're not doing anything?

Requirements - Anything really. I think it will even run on a 486.

It runs in the background when the CPu is idle. It should not affect your day-to-day running, although I turn it off whilst using my PC anyway.

<< How much does this thing upload a day? >>

Seti uses very little bandwidth. You don't even have to be connected to the internet to analyze the data. It downloads work units in roughly 300KB chunks, spends several hours analyzing it, and then sends the results back. Those results it uploads are only a few kilobytes in size.

If you're not into the whole "searching for E.T." thing, then consider joining another distributed computing project, like United Devices Cancer Research or ECCp-109. Info on DC projects other than Seti can be found in this welcome thread.

Joining any of these is better than having your computer idle away wasting electicity. At least while it's idle now, it'll be hunting for aliens or searching for a cure for cancer.

Of course your computer is not doing anything while idle either, so why not get your money's worth out of it?
