I just bought a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5s

I am fairly sure it has the 4cyl engine, but my gas milage for the last few days has been horrible. I have been barely getting in the upper teens in milage. At least 70% of it is highway driving. My 02 Stratus with the V6 gets better gas milage than that.

Is there something i can check or something I can tune? Is this normal gas milage i should expect from such an high powered 4cyl?

Cars (engine) generally get better gas mileage as you "break them in."

Oh wait, it's an '03 model that you bought used?
Take it to altimas.net.

Ask your average RX7/RX8 driver. They'll respond "six"

Take it to an Autozone and have them check your computer for fault codes for free.
It sounds like you may have a bad oxygen sensor or a plugged catylitic converter.

Excuse me, Jackhole, I have had the car 2 days. I assume it's the 4cyl, but the gas milage was making me wonder.

I am serious. I was just looking for people's experience if my milage i have seen is the norm.

The milage is not the norm, I hope you got a warranty from wherever you bought it from... it needs some type of repair. You should be getting at least 23-24mpg in the city.

Shouldn't you have known what was in the vehicle though? How do you know what kind of price to pay for it?

Um, why the hell did you buy a car you know nothing about? 2.5 = engine size, referring to the 4 cylinder in the Altima. The 3.5 is the V6.

And no, that's not normal. Have you tried taking it back to the dealership?

You still f'ing bought a car without knowing how many cylinders it has. I think you're the Jackhole in this situation:roll:

Jeebus!!

Does no one read around here? I said, I bought the 2.5s which I know was the 174hp 4cyl. But with the current gas milage, I was beginning to wonder (making a small joke).

Just forget it. Obviously I am getting more bitching than I am getting information.

No, your car shouldn't be getting that low mileage. My 2.2 has 200 hp and gets about 28 on the highway, maybe 24 around town. Naturally less if I drive with a leadfoot

Thank you, some info. It is a high powered 4cyl DOHC. I figured I might get around 25 or so average, but this kinda gas milage makes me wonder if i have a figgin hole in the tank. I'm used to the low powered GM 4cyl engines giving me 30+.

I figure I will just run some octane booster, injector cleaner and maybe take that earlier suggestion to have either the dealer or AutoZone read my codes to see if there is any issue.

What is the suggested octane for this engine? I have heard 89+.

You can run regular in it. But I repeat again, numbers that low suggest either something is wrong with the car or you drive with a lead foot. Does the tranny seem to shift "normally"?
