Need a little help.

I've installed Mandrake 8.1 and actually have it up and running. One small problem though. I have 2 CD-Rom's (1 DVD and 1 CDR). THe CDR has been listed as a removable drive, but the DVD isn't. Thus I cannot eject CD's in the DVD unless I reboot and do the swapping while boot-up is taking place. Some of the software I need to install is spanned across 2 CD's, thus I am unable to install (system auto looks to the DVD since that is the drive I installed Linux from). In other words, how do I add the DVD to the Removable Drives section.

And I am trying to install a Linux monitoring software for Seti, so I consider this to be on topic.

I'm not sure why the CDR is even being listed as "removable". I always thought that category applied to stuff like hot-swap hard drives, etc.

How are those devices configured in your /etc/fstab file?

It's all greek to me:

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0

/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0

CDROM is the DVD
CDROM2 is the CDR

Both are on the Secondary IDE (Master, Slave) channel, not sure why one is showing SCSI (I'm assuming SCD is SCSI).

wouldn't the second CR Rom drive be /dev/hdc1 ?

Do you have two CD icons on your desktop?

If there is a little green arrow on the bottom, the drive is still mounted and you can't open a mounted drive.

Easy Way -> Right click the CD icon and click unmount, then you should be able to eject the disk.

Hard Way -> In a term box, type umount /dev/hdc then you should be able to hit the eject botton.

Both drives are being automounted as is the default in the standard install of Mandrake.

CD-ROMs don't have partitions, so you address it directly (hence hdc instead of hdc?)

The CD-RW drive is listed as a SCSI drive as you need to emulate SCSI over IDE in order to burn a CD (Windows does this too, but it's hidden from the user more).

I don't use Mandrake, but those settings seem kind of strange to me.

IIRC, the iocharset, umask, and codepage mount options are for FAT filesystems, so I don't know why they are there for CDs.


I tend to set up CD/DVD-ROMs like this:

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 owner,ro,noauto 0 0

I use owner instead of user because my system gives ownership of the necessary files to the person logged into the console. Otherwise, another user on the system could mount the drives, and you would be locked out.


Anyway, just MHO.


Doh! Didn't read very carefully. Didn't notice the 2nd drive was a CD-R. Extracted incorrect comment. Plus, I've never had a CD-R/W that wasn't SCSI, so I wouldn't notice the difference!
