12-15 is a little optimistic as far as actually knowing these guys and verifying they indeed had this problem (there are alot of makers of products that have 'more customers' than total packages they have sold).
Still if it was due to fuel management this is the owner's faults. You drop even $3k on a forced induction solution you best get a dyno run and know your A/F ratios as well as know if you are pinging/detonating/preigniting etc. There are no totally 'bolt-on' solutions were forced induction is on the field. For less than $300 you can get the information you need on the tune of the engine in question as well as the tuning needed, and/or the parts you need to buy to complete the deal.
In any car group you will have plenty of people trying 'junk yard' / 'shadetree' boost and of those guys maybe 5% know wtf they are doing, the rest either blown up their engines, start another project a mechanic will have to sort out or get lucky and not have too many terminal problems.
When it comes to the NSX, there are VERY few FI options available, and ALL of them will run you close to $10,000 or more (the cheapest being the BaschBoost which will run you 7-8K installed with a SplitSecond solution for fuel management rather than a full standalone solution). The cars that are blowing appear to be the ones that don't have an intercooler/aftercooler (whichever terminology you'd prefer) set up. P
People running with full AEM fuel management setups appear to be doing well also. The majority of the engines blowing are running the BaschBoost setup (which had at least 3 different versions of fuel management). There is an entire webboard dedicated to the topic of blown BaschBoost engines. Almost all of these superchargers have been installed and tuned by Mark Basch himself. If you REALLY wanted to get into the nitty gritty, you could read up on this topic for days in the boost forum on nsxprime.com and in the "Grenade Talk" forum at
http://www.baschboost.org/forums/
BTW, Mark Basch is probably THE #1 NSX mechanic in the world, however perhaps he's not #1 when it comes to knowledge of forced induction and fuel management . On the other hand, the majority of his installs are running with ZERO problems. It's just a huge topic in the NSX community these days because he has the cheapest solution (if you have no problems) and because there have been so many problem engines in the past year.
So for NSX, you're basically looking at
Supercharger solutions: Gruppe M (probably around $12K installed), Comptech ($10Kish), Basch ($8-9K)
none of these have standalone fuel management, so add in extra for that
Turbo: These cars are DESTROYING the supercharged cars for useable HP/Torque looking at the available power under the curve on a dyno. You saw what the Factor-X car did. These setups are all custom, there's no "package price" and Gerry Johnson and Factor-X will run you more than all the above solutions if you want some serious power. It remains to be seen how reliability will be affected, but Gerry has been running his car with 500hp+ for several years now with no issues (but these solutions involve engine internals upgrades, none of the supercharged options are doing that).
Bottom line, NSX can be made to run very fast if you have deep pockets, but reliability could be an issue. We are all screaming at Honda to update the car and give it some real power. It DID destroy the current Ferrari when it came out in 1991 (the 348) which was one of Honda's targets, but today it's sadly lacking in power, especially for the price. It's long overdue for an update. Even still, it's a phenominal car all around, and a decent value if you buy used (1991's are going for $25k and up). My 91 with intake/headers/exhaust ran a 13.2@109 at Epping which isn't too shabby for a vehicle that was designed to go around corners fast. The other thing I love about this car is at 14 years old, there are no squeaks or rattles and everything is still rock solid. I've owned many American sports cars and they didn't feel this tight coming off the lot.
If anyone is in the MA/NH area, the NSX club in conjunction with the Lambo club, Ferrari club, Viper club and a few others are doing a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish on Saturday, June 19th in Merrimack, NH at the Anheiser Busch plant. I believe it's free to the public (the fundraising part came from people exhibiting their cars). A flyer is available here:

Feel free to come by and check out all the cars and say hey. I'll be there with a silver NSX, first digits on the MA license plate are 41L
