Bomber SMs were hilariously effective in certain situations. There were some famous fraps vids around at the time showing SMs diving off the wall at Alb MG in Emain and just pbaoe'ing the crap out of dozens of people.

Our guild had a couple of leveling tactics to exploit pbaoe SMs. We'd make big groups of our lowbie toons and do Tuscaren Glacier or Iarnvidiur, or the redcap camps in Modernagrav (I think), just pull masses of purples all night and roast them.

Another favorite was the Svartalf villages in Malmohus. There was one with a cluster of crates, and we could get half the guild's lowbies on the crates where they couldn't be touched, surround them with bomber SMs, and then pull the whole camp. It was the only time in five years that we actually exploited the geometry, but we couldn't help ourselves .

Yah friend botted 8 characters, he would power level characters for me in swamp, it was a long way out there, but it was empty from people begging to get PL and mobs spawned really fast. He would pull about 30 at a time with SM and go to town. It was really funny, I would go to school, come back and my toon was almost 45. Finish the last 5 levels next day.

PBAE bombs were originally a Hib tactic since SMs didn't have PBAE at launch and Ice Wizards weren't popular since bolts were OP for awhile. Hell, 40-50 was advantageous in Hib because we had Fin groups. I remember getting in them when I was a Void Eldy on Galahad ... it took forever to get to 50, though. I eventually built my own plvl group to do alts ... damn I miss that game. Why'd they have to go and ruin it, as well as giving up on the Classic servers? Ugh.

Ahh, the good 'ole days of running the CF fins list and maintaining the group for 8+ hours so there was no downtime at all.

I will be curious how no PvE will work, since that was an integral part of DAoC. I'm still definitely interested though.

The bomber groups were insane. I remember doing those with a couple druids and a bard. Keep defense was a joke. Wait for them to pound the door down, then hit them at a bottleneck. Those times were epic.

Eh, something else that was more fun was our NS keep group - 5 NS's, 1 Bard, 1 Warden, 1 Druid. Hib Galahad was probably the best overall Hib group, severely organized and we had some Asian guilds that would take care of things at night ... though I remember getting calls for RR's at 3am.

I was in Imperial March (Midgard) on Galahad, and getting you Hibs out of a keep with your shrooms was damn near impossible.

One night we determined to go after your relic, got a zerg up, dropped every keep in Alb, and once the whole server was convinced we were after Alb's relics we suicided the whole zerg on relic guards and reformed in Hib. Almost got the relic, too.

Good times .

Yeah, at the very end when it had been dumbed down beyond all recognition in order to try and keep a few of the hard core pvp guys subscribed.

At inception it literally took months to hit 50. I played three to five hours a night with an active guild and my first character took something like six months to cap.

I think it took me something like 20-30 days of play time to hit 50 in the first two years of the game. They really dumbed it down towards the end. In Midgard with Modernagrav we could level people from 1-50 in about 6-8 hours of play time at the end using spiritmasters and pac healers.

Yep, and it was ridiculous too... back in the "old days" even at level 47 getting something like 12 to 15 MILLION xp per mob killed (usually orange con), and it would still take multiple days to cap the level.

Hmm, let me list my characters ...

Hib:
Weslok (Elf Eldy)
Flawed (Realm first lvl 50 Valewalker)
Insult (Celt Ranger)
Spectator (Lurikeen Champion)
Noire (Elf Nightshade)

Those were my Hib RvR chars, my plvl bot was Carpemonkey and my buffbot was Pinkhighlighter.

I also played Midgard and Albion as well, primarily as Flawed after the jackass I sold my account to deleted the Valewalker and a Kobold Skald that I can't remember his name. I primarily played Melt's minstrel when I was in Alb but I also played his Scout too ... had lots of good friends there.

You remember Virus? heh ... we used to go bolt Albs together when I playd my Eldy.

Animist was prob the best class I ever played in a MMO. It was awesome in pve and pvp, hard to find a class that is good balance like that. I would stand in frontiers and stealth classes would try to kill me solo and to their dismay they died.

Animists were funny. Their pets could be setup to create a guantlet for the enemy. There was a griefer guild on mordred that would set them up on the roads and kill people riding on NPC horses lmao.

I particularily loved the Dark Spiritmaster for solo work. Buffed this class could kill any caster in about 5-6 seconds. And its animation looked like a bonedancer's lifetap. So most people figured they had 4.5 seconds to heal. But then it would keep coming at a rate of 1 per ~1.1 seconds and they died fast. I sniped so many casters with this class.

I think I still enjoyed my Necromancer the most in RvR. There was a good period of time where I would come across others in the Frontier and they were expecting a PvE special from me, and didn't know what to do. With shape-changes I'd get people trying to hit me while my pet would repeatedly free-cast. I also loved coming across casters once Champion Levels came out and I could have a full-range DOT. I caught quite a number of them by surprise since the DOT interrupted casting on every tick (unlike other class's DOTs).

I even ran him in an 8-man from time to time, bombing into the center of the other group's casters or healers with a PBAE DOT to keep them locked down while they blew timers to get rid of the DOTs.

As others above said, that most certainly was not the case when the game first came out. Leveling from 40-50 took a long as time and there was very very few areas where there were mobs to level up on in the mid to high 40's. I remember spending a ton of time killing Pooka's in groups because that was about the only thing worth killing at high levels.

I don't know how the game changed as expansions came out, but DAOC's level grind while easier than EQ's was still no walk in the park.

I never said it was the case on first release. My first 50 was a friar and took forever. After Shrouded Isles, it was definitely possible.

The game was about the RvR (to me). Getting there as fast as possible was the goal.

Since we're all being nostalgic and stuff... someone tell me: What's wrong with a Bonedancer with the name of "Bonure"? There's nothing wrong with that, right? RIGHT?

Stupid name nazis.

Over 1 million now, almost 1.1million. It is going to be close i fear. Hopefully it is like lots of kickstarters and get lots of pledges near end.

The concept videos with 500-1000 npcs on screen at same time is pretty impressive, that andrew programmer knows his stuff.

Hah names in DAOC were great thanks to the ability to have a lastname that could be changed.

I remember seeing "Wetarded Face" or "Foxnews FairandBalancedLikeme" on some fotm op class and couldnt stop laughing.

So the stretch goals is a new class per realm, plus The Depths. Think darkness falls, but open to all realms with a tower defense strategy going on, crafters can make different traps to slow the invaders. Seems pretty cool listening to him talk about concepts. Including crafters can place cameras in the dungeon to view out of game to watch the carnage (twitchtv?). That is awesome sounding.

I just loved all of the creative names that popped up from death messages.

The best one was Hissister. Those kinds of names always cracked me up. ^^

I'm officially a backer @$110. Didn't see much reason for the $120, even being only $10 more. Alpha access is fine by me!

This game looks sooooo gooooood. I got in for the $180 internal alpha tester, took a week of having a script run wget and grep the results to see if one was open.

I'm not a huge fan of the PvP MMOs due to the crowd of asshats they attract, but he really caught my attention in their KS video when he stated they were going to have pure crafting classes with all in game items being purely player made. No loot drops.

It's no fun if there's no adversity. Griefers and asshats are simply part of the landscape in PvP and you either learn to accept that or not.
