Camera Help - T5i LCD issues

Hi All,

I was using my Canon T5i today, and most of the day, it was fine. However, at the end of my shooting, I noticed the LCD screen isn't showing anything anymore. Live view brings up nothing, the menu/info buttons don't make anything appear on the screen. And it doesn't appear to be a blocked IR sensor.

Any suggestions on how I could try to fix it short of sending it back to Canon? At 4.5 years old, if it can't be fixed relatively easily, I may just use this as an opportunity to upgrade... maybe a EOS 77D (seems like I can stack a few discounts via Google Express and American Express to snag a new 77D body for ~$600)?

The battery was at least half full. I did try removing the battery, but that didn't help. I'll try charging the battery to full, but I have this feeling that it won't make much of a difference.

Sometimes a fresh battery along with fresh media can help things to reset. Otherwise, I would suspect something came loose internally. In that case sending to a Canon Service Center may be necessary. Do you have a decent camera shop where you live?

There might be a decent camera shop near me. I'd have to look into that and see how much it would cost to repair. It's just weird that it was working all of Saturday afternoon, then suddenly stopped working. I'm hesistent to spend too much in a wild goose chase repair given the camera's age and potential repair costs.

I should note that the screen is also blank (backlit only) when I had no SD card inserted.

Try removing the battery and let it sit for an hour or so. Also check the manual and see if there's a process to reset the camera. Also the camera has a mini HDMI port. Maybe try grabbing a cable to test.

Yeah, still works otherwise. The problem on the T5i is many settings are only available through the screen.

As an update, I managed to get the EOS Utility installed (had to pull the serial number for my camera in Lightroom since it rubbed off the camera) - live view on the computer with USB worked fine. I tried reflashing the firmware and that somehow gave a temporary fix: the screen sort of worked after that - sometimes it was flickering on and off, having weird lines on the display, or just not showing anything at all. I may just look to replace it at this point if it's going to be so problematic.

As a further update: it seems like the working screen was only momentary. Now it doesn't work again...

Finally got a picture of the screen when it's been in one of its funks.

It either looks like the above or blank with faint backlight. It did momentarily work pripepro after I reflashed the firmware, but then it went quickly back to the broken state.

Still need to find a nearby shop to see of it can be repaired for a reasonable price, so that I could sell the T5i off. In the meantime, I used the opportunity to pick up a 77d body for $600+tax.
