Can 1 SATA drive be the ONLY HDD in system?

Experimenting with my new system and I'm wonderring if I can use my new Maxtor 80GB SATA drive as the only drive for the system...or if I can use it as a supplimental drive with my WD 60GB IDE drive as the boot drive. Currently Win 98 won't recognize the SATA drive, nor does the drive show up in the (updated) BIOS.

Can SATA drives ONLY be used in RAID configurations, or can they be used alone?

Install the SATA drivers so Windows can see the controller.

The only SATA drivers I have for the MoBo seem to e for RAID controllers (the promise and VIA controllers on my K8V Deluxe). Should there be a way to install drivers for the controller if I'm using it in a non-RAID configuration?

You can set up the Promise controller to work as a single drive solution. You manual details this for you.

Either way, Windows will need the drivers before it recognizes the SATA ports.

Your mobo has a Promise SATA378 Driver V1.00.0.26 (ATA Mode) at the asus site. This is the driver you want.

use the raid controller drivers, it should be able to be setup as a raid 0 by itself(no performance benefits) if the raid controller doesn't support jbod. read the manual with the mobo (assuming it is a decent manual it should explain in more detail for you)

Install the drivers in Windows setup and you'll be fine. It's that simple. You have to install the RAID drivers because the controller is a RAID controller, whether you are setting up a RAID or not. I had to do the same thing with my motherboard.

So I managed to get the VIA controller to recognize the drive but not the Promise controller...in fact, windows is having trouble installing the Promise controller drivers referenced above...the error message reads that the device could not be started.

With the drive on the VIA controller, it shows up as a HDD in the BIOS but not in the boot priority list, and it does not show up in windows setup if I try to install XP onto it...WTF??

If XP setup won't recognize the drive (yes, its formatted) how could I even slipsteam the drivers (if that's what it comes down to)??

You need to hit F6 when Windows starts installing and install the SATA\RAID\SCSI drivers so that the drive is recognized.

right...I'll try that...during which part of the beginning of the install do I get the opportunity to hit F6?

Boot from the Windows CD, you'll see at the bottum it'll say hit F6 to load third party drivers (it's right at the beginning of the boot process.)

You can use it as the only system if you want. Maybe update from 98 to xp though... also you will need to download drivers from your mobo manufacturer (check their website) for the sata drive to show up in the installation. Hit F6 during installation to install the drivers.
