Can 950M make laptop fans spin louder then 940M?

I can buy an Asus K501 laptop with either a GTX 950M or 940M video card. Am I correct that the 950M is better but also has higher power consumption then the 940M, apparently 50W vs 30W see below. I don't know if the 950M has cooling itself and if it's different/better or louder then the 940M, but is it reasonable to assume if i get the K501 with the 950M that the fans will have to work harder meaning more noise then with a 940M?

I found this 950M vs 940M comparison:
Both GPUs are part of the Maxwell family and feature NVIDIA Optimus and NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0. However, GTX 950M has 640 shader units (384 for 940M), a 128-bit memory bus (64-bit for 940M) and higher power consumption – about 50 watts (~30W for 940M).

To complete the info: I can buy either an ASUS K501UB-DM031T-BE with 940M or ASUS K501UX-DM140T with 950M in case somebody knows the difference between a K501UB vs K501UX.

Hope knowledge people here can clarify with this. Thanks in advance.

It'll run a little hotter but it's still a relatively cool-running GPU. The speed difference in gaming is HUGE though, and well worth the SMALL amount of fan noise you'll get from it.

I see they're both thin ultrabooks though... in that thin of a unit, the fan will be smaller and potentially whinier. Tough choice...

...of course you only have the ramped-up fan during gaming. Video/web won't cause the GPU to heat up.

Anyone review those units and leave comments about noise, etc? Looking at the ASUS pages, they seem to be making a concentrated effort to keep the units both cool AND quiet but the GTX 950M version gets even higher-end cooling. I think it'll be fine.

Where did you read that the 950M has higher end cooling then the 940M?

I'd recommend the 950m also — if you're worried about heat and noise, get a cooling pad

I have a laptop with a 760m (768 keplar cores) and it's good for 720p-900p medium/high settings on a lot of games (I try to run at 60fps mostly). 950m should hopefully be a little better, but it's still not exactly a massive amount of power. 940m will be 720p low settings

So the 950M uses 50W and the 940M only 30W. How does that compare with more high end cards like the 960?

The thin body of the K501 might cause problems with heat i'm afraid and therefore more cooling, not?

I was looking at those models directly off the ASUS website product pages. The model with the 950M looked like it had a more advanced cooling system.

Which Asus model did you look at (link)? Not sure if Asus does anything special to there laptops ie. they make the same K501 with both 940M and 950M vidcards.
